| in my experience for hotels hotels.com for flights travelocity.com. Sometimes you get a better price directly through the hotel or airline. Best prices are during the week at non peak hours. there is also priceline but i'm not sure if they do overseas. |

There's not really such thing as a 'cheap travel site'. All Expedia, Travelocity, et. al. do is search the GDS, basically a computer system that the airline publishes its prices on.
Some of the sites, on occasion will offer specials such as yellow bannered 'Expedia Special Fares' and the like where they've bulk purchased a load of tickets.
Kayak is probably a good place to start for airline tickets as it searches the various online TAs simultaneously and directs you to the site where you can book.
For hotels if you just want a certain standard in a given area then you can try naming your own price on Priceline. You can look up the potential hotels and winning bid prices on www.biddingfortravel.com I used to use this method quite a bit but now I'd rather pay more to get specific hotels. |

one of the problems with priceline is that 4 star hotels often offer fewer amenities than you would expect of a normal hotel. $25/night parking, no free internet or breakfast, an expensive hotel restaurant...
I agree there is not much if any price difference between booking sites. |

That can be true to some extent, but if you check out www.biddingfortravel.com you can at least see which hotels are in each zone and star category.
The other thing that some people comment on is that for the 'name your own price' deals the hotels will give you the least desirable rooms. But they should honour all the amenities at the same price that the hotel offer for guests booked into the lowest standard of room. |

+1 on using kayak.

1. Kayak search
2. Check the airline's site (sometimes cheaper, sometimes more expensive, often the same)
3. Book flight on the better option
4. Call hotel, book directly. Always at least as cheap, and always gives you more flexibility.
...either that or call Amex and let them do the work. :o |
