I'm talking about the bandwagon fans. OMG Rangers are winning and are from NYC, lets cheer for them cause we dont know better.
I have seen this many times, just because it has NYC attachment with it. |
To be fair, every franchise and every sport has that. |

LOL for real :haha: "OMG GOOO Lakers!!!!" "OMG Gooooo HEAT!!!" "OMG gooooo SPAIN!!!" "Omg gooooo Man U!!!" "OMG GOOOOO KNICKS!!!!"
:haha:
btw Im not really familiar with this HBO show, but I think Sidney would be a huge draw because he DOES pull emotional strings on both sides: He is an idol and a woman magnet for those who love him and an and a bitch to the rest (think: a more talented version of Christiano Ronaldo).
I would be interested in a show on both sides, because both elicites some sort of emotion. Emotional reaction to a show = money. (ie: I would equally watch a Messier show and a Potvin show, but for different reasons). |

In other news, the passing of Boogaard is really really shocking. I'm afraid to find out what the cause was; no matter what it was, it won't be good for hockey... |
They did mention that he was in treatment for mental health/substance abuse, but we wont know the autopsy results for a couple weeks. Still, truly sad when someone passes so young, regardless of their celebrity :( :( |

Don't know if I agree with this. Rangers have some of the most loyal fans in the league. Even Mike Francessa, who gives hockey no respect said the Rangers have the best fans in NY. |
I'm not going to dispute that Madison Square Garden has more fans in it every game than at the Devils or Islanders games nearby, it's common sense. I'm not dumb enough to start that fight haha..
But really, I'm not sure how you can gauge a "loyal" following. On the flip side, one of the problems the Rangers are having, and this is coming out more and more on sports radio and hockey discussion is that the fans have been PRICED OUT, I'm sure you know this firsthand. What MSG has become is one big afterwork client meeting, like Yankees Stadium (at times).
You can call any number of non-Southern teams an "extremely loyal fanbase". I mean, look at Toronto, Boston, Philly, Montreal. Some of these fans' support blows the Rangers out of the water.
That's besides the point though; I really don't think Briere, Giroux, Pronger (and Laviolette)/Avery, Lundqvuist, Dubinsky (and Tortorella) have that nationwide appeal. People in Chicago or Detroit or Dallas really don't give a .. The calibur, fame, and marketability of the players just isn't up to par with the teams I mentioned previously (Vancouver, Detroit, Tampa Bay, etc.).. No kid outside of New York or Philly is buying a Gaborik or Carcillo jersey or stick..
If this were in the 90s, it'd be a completely different story: Gretzky, Messier, Richter, Graves, etc.; Lindros, Leclaire, Ron Hextall, etc... This is the sort of aura and name-power I'm talking about.. |

| That being said, the more I think about it, the more I think they actually WILL do a 24/7. It was SO successful last year with Capitals/Penguins, I'm sure they'll want to do it regardless. I just don't think the ratings will be anywhere near as high.. |

I wouldn't go that far. I put Ranger fans right up there with every team you mentioned, except for maybe Montreal.
As far as the HBO thing, Crosby and Ovechkin were only a small part of the series. What made the show so good was the segments with the lesser known players like Mike Rupp and Pascal Dupuis and the coaches. And come on? Is Bodreau and McPhee going to more interesting than Tortorella and Sather? You don't need big names to make a show like that successful you just need interesting stories, which HBO is very good at. Doesn't matter that people aren't wearing Gaborik or Carcillo jerseys, it matters if it's good TV or not. In fact, the NHL has gone out of its way of marketing the sport and not the players, which I don't agree with but that's the stance they are taking, for whatever reason. |

Theres one thing you guys need to get straight, its not just the Rangers or Montreal or Detroit or Chicago... The sport of hockey itself is a very tight knit group. All these big cities have very loyal fans, regardless of the amount. Hell, look at the Nashville Predators... I would have NEVER thought Id see the day they would have sold out games and so much passion in the stands. Once youre hooked, you never look back.
And BTW, Crosby wouldnt be the face of the NHL if he was the most hated player in the game. |

This whole "loyal fan" argument is so old and retarded, as very few people have the capacity to talk to every single fan out there, and to get a gauge of "how loyal" they each are as a general population.
What factors are we using to research this? Do we have to watch a certain percentage of games? Buy a certain percentage of tickets? Buy a certain percentage of gear? Watch them for a certain amount of years? And who determines these factors? YOU? LOL.....I mean pleaseee, we have to be loyal, we arent exactly the most winning-est team on earth, so the fact that we are still here in the first place says a whole lot. We are like Mets fans (cept we usually make it as far as the playoffs before we lose every year). Say all you want about our win/loss column but please dont go there on how loyal "fans" are because that comes down to each individual person and no one can say about that. |

haha You're so off-base, dude, it's not even funny, it's borderline frustrating. Please don't tell me that you don't think millions of teens and kids all over the country look up to Crosby as their idol. He has the highest selling stick and skates on the market. There's a reason NBC's "Game of the Week" is usually a Capitals or Penguins game. You literally have no idea what you're talking about. The fact that you actually think everyone hates Crosby, but somehow there's widespread interest in seeing Sean Avery or Chris Pronger behind the scenes, is clear evidence of this.
They're not "cancelling" anything. 24/7 is usually a one-time special, not something HBO has pledged to do every year.
Look, obviously the game itself is going to be a sell-out, it's going to be physical, and many people around the East are going to watch it; it's probably going to be entertaining. But for you to think that an HBO 24/7 series of it would get good ratings is way off-base.
The Sedins and Luongo (Vancouver), LeCavelier, Stamkos, and St. Louis (Tampa Bay), or the Red Wings would easily draw the excitement of fans to watch a 24/7 series. The players of both Philly or New York do NOT have that kind of draw or "aura", for lack of a better word. People are really not that interested.. |
So you think Vancouver and Tampa Bay are bigger American draws than the Rangers and Flyers? Completely delusional. The U.S. couldn't give two s about Vancouver, let alone the Sedins who don't speak much English. Your alternative teams to the Rangers and Flyers -- the Canucks and Lightning -- are ing laughable.
The Pens are on every week on NBC because the NHL markets the hell out of Crosby. It does not make him any more liked as a player. No one I know, either on the internet or in real life is a Crosby fan. Where are his legions of "loyal" followers? Where?
Didn't know you were this much of a bitter Devils homer. |

| Nobody would care about watching Rangers/Flyers or Canucks/Lighting HBO special. Maybe Canucks only because they have twins playing on the same line. |

The Rangers/Flyers HBO series will happen and it will draw in great ratings.
It's asnine to think any other way. Literally delusional to the highest caliber. |
