Kicks drowning out the actual music at festivals?!?! Who's still mixing sensibly?

Has anyone else noticed kick drum levels are becoming so loud they're now drowning out the rest of the music on the dancefloor!?! It's insane...

This is obviously a bigger problem at indoor events...

1. Are people hearing this same problem?

2. Who do you all think is mixing their kicks too loud, and who's mixing them at the right level?

i have noticed this....

its basically an unce unce unce unce at some shows...

Limiters and other equipment take all the dynamics out of the track and give it all a slick punchy sound. Terrible.

I think part of the cause of this is the overly long tails people keep on their kicks. It's become a strange mission to get as much bass out of the kick as possible.

It's ridiculous. You can't even dance to it when the kick is so long because it kills the groove. It just sounds like BOOOOOOMBOOOOOOOOMBOOOOOOOOMBOOOOOOOOOMBOOOOOOOOM. There could be toms and hats but you sure as hell can't hear them.

It seems like all they're trying to do is get the teenieboppers with skull candy earbuds to talk about how SIKK THE BASS IS.

This trend has been going in the last 5 years.

Yes, exactly like an awful lot of 13 year old Skrillex fans with Skull Candy ear phones.

I think the problem may be with how the venue's sound is set up. I don't notice this problem honestly, but it could be the music you guys are listening to as well. What music do you guys notice this trend most prominently with?

Yes venue obviously plays a huge part, but this really hasn't been a big problem until the last 2 years or so IMO, which means it is the ever increasing kick levels (and we all know that's been going up and up).

Hear it in trance and especially house. Go to the Size records catalog, or even some of Axwell's and Dirty South's stuff. Kicks are HUGE!

The 'market' is saturated with producers and labels, quality control is a rarity and I get the impression most people take it upon themselves to master their own stuff, so there isn't the professional opinion warning you against mixing your kick too loud etc/keeping things in check.

Funnily enough, SHM terrible single One 'Your Name' (for example) was mixed and mastered by someone at Metropolis (apparently....i wouldn't quote me on it) and looking at it on meters it's far better balanced than Angello's, Ingrosso's and Axwell's slightly older stuff..
