Errr stayed true to himself? He used to be one of the coolest underground Progressive DJ's out there. He decided to chase $$$$, switched to commercial Trance and followed the rest of the superstar DJ's out there, turning his back on Progressive.
He's now doing the same thing following the Pop DJ's trying his best to make Pop records. If he was making the track because he loved it so much, why make a video (with himself in it)? Videos are made to hit a more mainstream market place, MTV etc. That's why he stars in them himself, because he wants to be that famous person. Would you ever see Sasha or Digweed in a cheesy video. No because music comes first to them.
I used to work for Sony, EMI and Virgin music managing bands/pop stars, I know exactly what he's doing and the route he taking. His management are doing the same with the rest of the guys they look after. |
First of all, I'd hardly say what Markus plays "commercial trance." That's laughable. If you're talking about Armin then yes, completely but not Markus.
While he might have played prog you might want to remember progressive house died out. I've been into Markus since 2003 & I loved that style but it became a dead cause. How is a DJ supposed to play something that no one really produces anymore? Markus doesn't play anywhere near what Armin along with the rest of the cheesy DJ's play.
And while he might have made a few cheesy tracks doesn't mean he isn't true to his sound...I have yet to hear any other DJ play like Markus. In his studio mixes he still drops prog trance. Live he plays funky tunes which are meant for clubs.
If you want to talk about DJ's that haven't kept true to themselves you can mention Sander van Doorn, Paul van Dyk, Tiesto, Armin ETC ETC
Markus, sorry he hasn't gone that route. This song isn't my cup of tea but if he felt inspired then why the hell not? |

| I don't hate Markus like some of you seem too. I like him but this video and song made me cringe. |

Hey man, being the photocopy guy does not count as "working" at all those places. |
You have no idea my friend. I'm in my early fifties, and have been in this industry 30 years.
I now own a very large publishing company associated with the TV and movie World. |

No matter your experience (true or not) do not assume that you know what an artist is doing. Unless you are a psychic or a close friend of Markus, you will not TRULY know what is going on. |

I don't understand all the defensive bashing, I'm not having a pop a Markus just observing what he's doing. He's a clever fella and a good businessman.
To dismiss the fact that he's a commercial DJ is nonsense. As with any product you sell in the World, if you want to sell more and make more money, that product must appeal to the masses and be more commercially viable. Markus obviously reached a point in his career where he couldn't get any further in the Progressive scene, he wanted more. Looking at the commercial Trance scene, it was much bigger. Grossed a hell of a lot more income, and was more accessible to masses, so he took this move.
There's no physic needed, the proof is in watching his moves.
Most daytime radio stations for example wont support instrumental tracks, nor tracks over 4 minutes long. To reach the greater masses you need this support, why he's making 3:30 minute versions of his vocal tracks in order to gain radio support.
The same can be said in the media World with MTV and such territorially, again why he makes supporting videos for his singles to get airplay support this growing his brand.
The more you guys support the fact he just a regular specialist Trance DJ, just devalues the true meaning of Trance. You/Markus cheapen the value of this scene, Trance is becoming a cheap laughable genre thanks to this misrepuestation. |

| Sleepwalkers, even the vocal mix is hardly an attempt to attract mainstream audience. If you think it is, you either never listen to mainstream music or you didn't actually listen to the song. Markus has definitely made songs that do fall into more mainstream than trance, but this? No. It's not trance by a longshot, but it's not mainstream by a longshot either. Is it an attempt to get a wider audience or even to target a specific audience? Maybe. But since I've been reading about how Markus loved break dancing growing up and as young adult for the last 5-6 years, I'm going to take him for his word that this really was just a passion project for fun. |
