Wait a couple of months (new ones should be released by then) and then decide. Whatever you do, don't buy apple's SSD - buy a mac pro with one drive and then install whatever drives you need after the fact.

Also, forget the larger size SSD's for at least the next 6 months. 250gb and above are still seriously over priced (the cheapest 1tb SSD is retailing for about $1900) and frankly, you only need a small drive for the system and audio apps and programs (say 160gb tops).

That's why I say get a mac pro with one decent large normal hard drive, put the SSD in yourself and use it as your system drive with the HDD for samples etc.

Then once the price of large SSD's come down, gradually switch over to those. There's no way you'd be able to max that puppy out. Thats would be a seriously sweet setup with your lavry ;)

yeah i bet new mac pro's are on the way , everything else had been updated. Anyway wuts wrong with apple's ssds and i agree they are overpriced

The Apple SSD's are overpriced for their small size and in terms of performance (speed) some of the worst on the market.

You can buy drives for half the money from either intel or ocz that will drastically outperform the apple drives.

In fact for the same money as one apple installed SSD, you can buy one aftermarket SSD + another very large internal HDD for storage and still have money left over for a external portable dive.

Honestly, unless you cannot use a screwdriver or just have more money than sense, there's no good reason to buy an apple SSD.

@evo8 - definately a good resource but never take their stuff as gospel. They got the ipad release dates off by many months and are have been suggesting that apple are going to switch over to ARM processors, which I don't think will happen.

+1. Just make sure it's the 3rd generation ones that does sata3

Or you could go for a intel 510 series. Either one would be great - there's not much performance difference.

Just bear in mind you'll need A $10 adapter to make a 2.5" drive fit in to the 3.5 mac pro drive bays.

I would not suggest buying a 3.5 drive as the majority of manufacturers have gone with the 2.5 form factor so there is more variety and better (and therefore cheaper) options with the 2.5" size.

If you want the fastest possible system (ever), buy two intel SSD'd and RAID 0 them. Expensive, but still probably cheaper than a single apple SSD.

Don't do that it's seriously easy to install yourself. Your mac came with a little booklet called 'everything mac' that has instructions on how to swap out the harddrive. All you need is a small screwdriver. Flip the bitch over, remove the bottom, the HD is right there. So easy. Just be careful removing the SATA connection it's kinda flimsy

Screws bottom, screws holding hd bracket, 4 screws on hd sides to remain in bracket. 1 ribbon cable with a tab. About 15 mins of work.

Ifixit.com - has picture for every step.
