Friday:
BBQ @ my place with Jem, Andrea, Pat. ---> hurting pat on saturday and wkend not even started! Good times

Saturday:
Ambivalent and Heartthrob 8/10
Gaiser saw 20 mins or so. LOVE LOVE the guy. Similar set everytime he plays.....but its always dope. He really had the beatport stage exploding! 9/10

Missed Marc Houle which is a shame cuz i really like his stuff.

Visionquest.....didnt know them before the weekend (only knew some of the guys standalone). I think its one of my fav discoveries of the wkend. great beats, too bad i didnt see the whole thing. Grabbed their set online and will listen this wkend (i dont think it was fully recorded though)

Richie - Really enjoyed what i saw. danced my ass of w/ Jem and Kabelicious on the outskirts in the rain

Disappointed to have missed:
Visionquest (didnt see enuff)
Marc Houle

Saturday Afterparty: CLR
Elysium is a wicked club. ~100 ft high ceilings, columns all around, decent service. Main room had collabs who ripped the place a new one. This was the place to be to hear techno. Downstairs had dettman/drumcell.....the times i checked it out...it did nothing for me, plus it was hot as and people were smoking....so went back upstairs
In the top part of the club, they have very nice booths and views over the main floor.
8/10

Sunday:
Got into the festival midway thru Ricardo's set and it didnt do much for me....so wandered around a bit and didnt find much to my liking either. Martin Buttrich had some good beats when i checked it out. I have the set...so i can hear the whole thing :)

Sven sven sven :disbelief
He had the crowd eating out of his palms. The first hour was a build up and then he made the place explode for an hour straight. the visuals behind him were pure jokes!!!! i want a copy of that to sketch people out :p
Left after 5 mins after Carl Craig started as i wanted to change before boat.

Disappointed to have missed:
Ben Klock
Marcel Dettman
Steve Rachmad (saw a little bit and it was banging techno!)
Martin Buttrich (didnt see enuff)

Sunday Afterparty:
Voyage Royale 3 w/ sven/villalobos/pullen/loco dice
Watched Sven for an hour and gave up. His set was too mellow and not a good way to keep the party going.
Wandered to Loco vs. Pullen and found my spot. They were dropping some serious party music.
Wandered a few times back to sven/villalobos and didnt find my groove.
Left at 330 ish
4/10

Monday Morning Afterparty:
Went to Old Miami from 11-4ish. Everything was perfect there. Music, weather, friends, environment. They played perfectly for the weather. Nothing banging, just simply perfectly put. Im glad i finally popped my Old Miami cherry. Id come to Detroit for this party alone!
10/10

Monday:
We rolled in at 730 to a rocking Dubfire. Best stuff ive heard from him. Every track was a banger. At 9, went to check out Calderone who did not do much for me. Not the right environment for his sound imho.

Checked out Claude Young for 30 mins and it was pretty enjoyable despite some decks mishaps....but ill give it to him since he was playing 4 decks and blending in soul, funk, techno in a pretty cool way.

At 10, we went to check out Fatboy slim and there was no way i was leaving that stage. He had the best party set of the weekend and one of the top closing sets at DEMF. He knows how to get the crowd going and dropped some gems that made the place erupt in ways ive never seen. The addition of lazers was a nice touch. His VJ' in the back was pretty wicked at times too.

Disappointed to have missed:
Adam Beyer
Paul Kalkbrenner

Best Performance:
Fatboy Slim
Sven @ Vitamin

Biggest Dissapointment:
Sven @ boat

Best After:
Old Miami

Best Ambience:
Old Miami

Best Food
Slow's stand @ The Festival

Best Discoveries:
Visionquest
All the DJ's who played at old miami between 11-4! SOOOO GOOD

Best Food

- Slow's stand @ The Festival (I think I ate 8 mini pulled pork sandwiches throughout the weekend)

on the first point, woah.

on the second, the best food place by far is the philly cheese steak stand (if it was still there). I believe it wasn't too far away from the "batteries, candy, toothbrush, lawnmower, Cheetos, potatosack, cigarettes" stand the year prior.

not going to get into details of the trip/antics as there are way too many.

On Saturday caught some Kerri Chandler who was playing really awesome deep house/classic house music, even though it was raining people were absolutely loving it. Then pretty much chilled at the Visionquest stage for the rest of the night and just exploring around, Seth was awesome as usual.
Decided to hit the afterparty with some people at the Works as i didnt have the circoloco ticket, Maceo Plex played an amazing set, singing live to some of his new tunes like "your style", hearing it live was bonkers. Also caught some Tanner Ross, No Regular Play and Three who all played great sets. Place was divided into 2 rooms including patio which had music as well so you could pick whatever you wanted to hear depending on the mood.

Sunday:
Slept nicely and ate, hit up Margaret Dygas on the main stage, she played some really nice tunage until Ricardo got on. The guy was playing minimal with speakers rattling like they were gonna blow up any minute now but it still wasn't loud, it was just fart music. Gave him a chance for 30min then bounced back to the hotel for some boozin, came back just in time for sven to come on and he was great, proper main stage party music. Hung out some more and hit up the boat. Not going to write a review as i think it was a big waste of time. Left as soon as it docked.

Monday

Slept in till about 1 and hit up old miami. it was the best music i've heard all weekend. There were so many djs playing that it was hard to pinpoint who was playing at any particular time, it was exteremely hot that day and most people were trying to find a shade and hide from the sun, including me. I did see at some point craig richards, ryan crosson (thnks to karlo) cassy and i think clockwork as well. Really glad i made it down but next time will definitely prepare weather wise.
Ate and hit up art dept at the bewatport stage, guys were killing it as usual, caught some justin martin who was decent but went into this pew pew sound which i don't enjoy. Went back to hotel drank some more and caught a little adam beyer and fatboy slim, the main stage was so rammed it took me a while to get anywhere. Hit up the underground stage and caught some James Zabiela who at one point started playing DNB which was ok, Paul then closed it up, caught most of his set which was really in good, people were going ape and the whole underground got really packed. In the end of the set he was not allowed to play one more track unfortunately, the whole crowd booed for 10minutes and didnt want to leave lol. Paul showed the finger to the sound guys packed his and the crowd dispersed lol.

hung around a bit and hit up Hot Natured with a few people, by that point i was already in "good condition" so can't really tell you specifics but i did catch Magda's disco set, Lee foss and Art dept as well, great venue but really ed up to get into, i was really lucky to get by accident quick as i ended up getting kicked out with a person in the line up who was involved with the party and was waiting in the line as well. We both didn't have proper ID's so with my money and his help we greased and got in.

Got a cab back with last money i had in my pocket and called it a night.

Best set: whoever at old miami
Biggest regret: missing tale of us a billion times during the festival whom i really wanted to see really bad.
Best afterparty: I love you but i've chosen techno
Best food at the festival: Chicken Gyros (that was crazy good)
Worst food at the festival: Slows stand, that stuff tasted like paper dipped in bbq sauce, i did not taste any meat in there.
Best Experience: meeting Aril Brikha at one of the stages, such a ing cool dude, but does not talk too much lol

Overall good times!! :D

Friday:
-Wound up at Oslo and got in free to a sold out party thanks to some incredible disorganization outside the door. Good party, not great, and not the best set I’ve heard from Cassy.

Saturday:
-Rested up a bit for the weekend before bouncing around a bit at the festival. Finally spent most my time at Visionquest, who all rocked it, and then ended the day at Hawtin

-CLR at Elysium was fun. Not packed, but a good, fun crowd and some rolling basslines as to be expected.

-Rested for all of 20 minutes back at the hotel before heading to Circoloco. Cassy more than made up for the previous night with an awesome set. Clockwork followed and was just as impressive. Had to leave midway through their set to make sure I got at least a couple hours sleep.

Sunday:
-Got some good rest and then back to the festival. Hopped around again before Villalobos, who put me to sleep within a couple minutes. Ran over to get a spot front and center for Buttrich and stayed for his entire set. Ben Klock then killed my next hour and a half with a banging set. Dettman followed and kept the tunes going. I had to pull myself away to go get ready for the evening.

-Boarded the boat and Vath was already on. I won’t go into detail because it’s already been mentioned, but WTF?!?!?! I purposely skipped most of his festival set because I figured we’d get a good dose of face melting on the boat…… I was wrong. Sleepy, boring, uninspired, blab la bla. Vath looked sooo disinterested and about to fall over. Don’t know if it was jet lag, drugs, or what. He hopped off the boat as soon as we docked and ‘lobos took over. He didn’t do it for me either so we got off pretty early. I got word later on that he really picked it pu a couple hours later, but I didn’t feel like waiting around.

-A brief stop back at the hotel while we pondered our options. Finally, we decided Get Physical was worth a visit. So so so so glad we came to this decision. Had a really good time at this party and saw my favorite set of the weekend from Heidi. Girl is bonkers behind the decks. Eventually left to put on shorts for Old Miami.

Monday:
-Arrived to Old Miami to somebody playing very slow-tempo tunes. I guess this was all right for early in the morning, but I was hoping for something a bit more exciting. The music did slowly start to pick up, as did the heat. As the afternoon approached, I was starting to struggle. A night of drinking and dancing was catching up to me due to the heat. Nausea stopped me dead in my tracks and I had to leave for a bit to collect myself and shower. Only rested for a few moments before heading back. I tried to find my groove once back at Old Miami, but my body had given up on me, and the heat was unbearable in the middle of the afternoon. Forced myself to call it quits and get some much needed air conditioning back at the hotel.

around catchin a little bit of everybody before settling in for Fatboy. I had been waiting for a long long time for the opportunity to catch him somewhere, and I’d all but given up on the idea before he got announced this year. I was so excited and he didn’t disappoint. I wouldn’t say I loved everything he played but, man, he sure knew what he was doing. Crowd was eating out of his hands and he was putting on a show. Some of the mashups and edits were amazing. His mixing was crazy, and the video was entertaining. Really, I coulnd’t have asked for more to close the festival.

-I tossed around afterparty ideas in my head but my body just wasn’t having it. I had tried to dance a little bit during fatboy’s set, but I couldn’t go more than a minute or two before stopping. So, I gave up on the afterparty idea and went to sleep a happy partier. After hearing how good Hot Natured was, though, I will probably regret this decision until next year, haha.

Summary:
Impressive
-The entire f’n festival. It’s just so amazing in every aspect. From the layout to the organization, the food, the people, sound, lighting and, of course, the music! Even with all the great after parties, pre-parties, and after-after parties, the festival is the main attraction and should be.
.
-Fav sets: Heidi @Get Physical, Cassy @Circoloco, Klock, Buttrich, Visionquest, Fatboy @Festival

-As always, the People!!!

Disappointing
-Vath on the boat. C’mon man.

-Me: Losing my stomach on Monday again this year. I take great pride in my stamina, but the beer and heat did not cooperate. I’m hoping it’s a little cooler for Old Miami next year. I also regret missing out on Hot Natured, or anything on Monday for that matter. It looks as though I’m still fine tuning my Detroit habits and I look forward to perfecting things next year.

Thanks to all that made this another great trip! See ya soo. I’ll be in NYC in one week, and then who knows……..….Canada Day? Ibiza? Zoo? BPM?
:tongue2

demf gets better year after year and for this reason I will continue to make a full commitment to go for years to come!!

saturday i couldn't make it because my cousin got married....

sarah, justin and i left kitchener at 930am Sunday morning and checked in around 12:45pm at the RenCen. going through sarnia is such a breeze, i suggest it to everyone wanting to cross the border with the least amount of hassle and smallest lineup. parking was only $24 the whole weekend!!! it was on the opposite side on Beaubien st.

after getting caught up with everyone on how saturday was (seems like it was a WET one!!) it was time to crush a few budweisers and head to the festival. if i had known how good circo loco was at that exact time I so would've cabbed there asap to see if i could get in, catch the tail end of the party and see what all the madness was about!!

getting our wrist bands was as simple as 1-2-3. went straight to beatport stage to check out livio and roby but they were late so i think it was tini who was playing. she was actually really really good and therefore i didn't mind that she was on. dance for quite a while here. perfect way to get into the demf spirit!! checked out ryan elliot for a bit and margaret dyas at the bowl. didn't really get into ryan elliot's live PA so i just chilled until Villalobos came on. i had low expectations for him and couldn't have cared less and therefore shrugged his set off as 'meh. sven vaeth came on and i only gave him 5 min before going to Ben Klock with lorenzo and alutza. boy oh ing boy...ben klock was the dj i was looking forward to checking out the most and i am so glad i left sven for him, even if he is papa. he orchestrated his set so well and his mixing/technicality was superior to any set i heard at demf all weekend. he played relentless percussive industrial style techno and dropped some really heavy detroit-ish tracks. the last half of his set was ing unreal and i just couldn't stop dancing!! i think i had like half a dozen legit "WOW" moments where i just smiled, shook my head and couldn't believe how many eargasms i produced in a row LOL! if you haven't heard his set yet you really need to, it's top notch!!!! the past 2 years they tweaked the underground stage to PERFECTION. give the sound techs a round of applause for that. that's a hard stage to setup.

for about 15 min i ran to delano smith who was dropping groovy/funky techno. it sounded really fresh and i'm really glad i got some air for a bit before heading back underground. after ben klock finished destroying the underground torino stage, i went back up to catch the tail end of sven's set and boy oh ing boy did he ever bring it! i loved how he was really into it and clapping the vinyls in the air, it sounded so crisp on that system, especially after villalobos ing killed my ears.left just before carl craig came on ....i heard he was one of the best of the weekend!

was going to go to the get physical party since we purchased tickets but we just got way too comfortable in our hotel room and decided to opt out, order lots of pizza, jam and get some rest for old miami. i think we crashed at 4am.

woke up at 8am to a few texts telling me how good old miami was so we all showered up and took a van cab. i love how cheap the cabs are here, for a 5 person van we got to old miami for $10 including tip. i have to comment on how nice the cabbies are in detroit!!! honestly!!

old miami was.......top 3 highlights of demf for me. we got there around 10am and had to wait in line about 15 min. no hassle, no checks, we all know why we're there. it was really slow when we got there....too slow for my liking. i got caught up with a few people, grabbed some beers and got settled. i was looking forward to the book of bad ideas cuz i heard it was going to be there this year and i had such a good line to write in it LOL. to be honest i don't know many dj's who were playing there - but i really dug the music they were playing. i was looking forward to craig richards but apparently he played before i got there and he wasn't that great so i had no regrets. it was so hot, and i know a lot of people took cover in the shade but i couldn't help but stand at the front and catch the act up front. the aura and atmosphere that old miami emits is one of the backbones as to why i'm in the scene. live for that . and , there was a lot of gorgeous people. best looking crowd!

i left at 2pm cuz i was starting to get too sucked in and dehydrated/sweaty and it was good timing as i caught a few friends to hitch a ride back with. from 2-4 i pretty much just chilled out, grabbed some food and let the a/c blast on me. got to the festival for anthony attala who had the hardest set at demf HANDS DOWN. he ing banged it so hard, even harder than ben klock. of course sarah loved it cuz she likes it hard hehe! if u wanted techno full on, attala was the one who brought it. BTW is his set released or was it even recorded?? i sooooo need to relive that massacre! shortly after his set i was ing drained went back to the hotel cuz i was and grabbed some mcdonalds. slept for 45 min and then went back for ali dubfire. he ripped the main bowl a new one. his build ups were so intense and then the visuals/lighting were on par with the drops, it was really another level! only thing i didn't like was he played the whole grindhouse track from pretty much start to finish lol...

unfortunately at 930 i got way too mangled and had to cut out of demf earlier than i had wished.......it was a combination of things but there was no way i could be there and i just in left :(

anyways all in all the 2 days i got at demf were amazing and i had so much fun with everyone! i think i spent about $250 in total. where else can u get that much value per $ spent??????

i'll do my best set/best this/worst that later...
