And they all go on and on about happiness and openmindedness and 'creativity', and I just wonder if it's not really about 'animal' identification at all.. it seems that the 'animal spirits have inspired man since prehistory' motive is bull, and that what's really bringing these people together and driving the style and the expression is more a longing for an innocent (and in some cases not so innocent) and extended adult childhood. |
Wouldn't animism be attractive for its innocence, though? Its loss of liability? That sort of religious culture predates recorded civilization, but it's not unfair to assume that mankind had an undeniable yearning to break free of civil fetters long before there was an entire industry, an entire paradigm to sugest 'freedom' to people. I think these things have a very similar source, but furry culture is obviously not shamanic in the least; it has cropped up from anime and hentai culture, the perversion (best word I have, though it sounds quite judgmental) of "innocence" previously marketed at children. It's all derivative of another market; it was not "decided" that there should be a culture as I don't believe such decisions ever lie in individuals unless they are attempting to do nothing but profit from them.
These things form from a severely escapist psycho-sexual fetish that I don't believe is any less "natural" than almost any other fixation you can put it up against. "Perversion" is an interesting word though - it would seem like anything that does not amount to conception is a perversion of some appendage or another. |

These are all very interesting points you're touching on but I still don't think you've addressed the important observation that the predominant aesthetic in the furry fandom is a commercial, 'disneyfied', child-oriented cartoon. I think you give them all too much credit.
Why does this aesthetic resonate with the furries more than something like this:

http://0.tqn.com/d/ancienthistory/1/0/0/F/Anubis.gif
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a...duk/oannes4.jpg
Why is it the furry fandom, and not the scaly fandom, or the hairy fandom, or the feathery fandom, etc.
Why are they always so plush? Surely someone has to recognize that wolves are vicious carnivores.
I never really considered furries perverts any more than WWII reenactors like Jay. And I'm a world class perv. |

| i only reenact scenes from schindler's list in bed...my interest in that period does not extend anywhere other than reading and using soap. |

I dunno, I bet there are some sadist furries out there somewhere. |

it looks like realism is cost prohibitive

also you probably run into uncanny valley which is probably scarier with furries than the cartoon style itself.
they probably have no choice but to be cartoons
probably the other part of it is that real animals look like they can tear your ing head off and thats not an easy way to make friends.

there’s a en hierarchy you know! ie people who love BSG are cooler than those that watch star trek. Nerds who play video games are cooler than those that play magic card games. those that know what vagina feels like are cooler than those that write mods for military simulation games. |

| I like when girls are dressed up partially as animals for halloween. Tails, paws, ears. I will the living daylights out of all of them |
