Need some help making video tutorials

I've been toying with making some video tutorials lately, but I can't figure out how to get the video capture software to record the audio from my soundcard (MOTU 828mkII). None of the screen capture software that I've tried (e.g., CamStudio, MS Expression) has an option to select my MOTU as an audio source. I'd like to be able to record my DAW's audio, as well as direct lines (i.e., a voiceover mic, live instruments) from my MOTU - maybe I need some sort of virtual cable router?

I've seen on various forums that this is a pretty widespread problem, but can't find many good solutions. My workaround has been to bounce the audio separately after the fact and line it up with the video in video editing software, but that's a PITA. How are you guys doing this?

I would ask Mark (SoundMagus), (Laurent) Lolo or Airbase (Jezper). I think all of them have the tutorial capture thing figured out.

I'd like some insight on this subject as well. I've been trying out some stuff but it's been painfull. I think I've got a possible solution but that requires gear investments I don't want to make right now (decent condensor and preamp to replace my cheap usb mic that sound quite good).

I need help with this too! People are asking me for HHC tutorials but I can't make them.

OK guys, I did a bit of digging and it seems these are the best (or at least most popular) for making tutorials on a PC:

Camtasia (Free Trial)
http://www.techsmith.com/camtasia.asp

Total Screen Recorder (Free)
http://www.totalscreenrecorder.com/

HyperCam (Free)

I've actually tried some version(s) of all three of those at one time or another, but I still had the same problem - no ability to record the audio directly from my soundcard. I'm thinking that it must be an inherent OS limitation???

I record system audio with Camtasia Studio 7 using ASIO4all (using stereo out as an audio capture in Camtasia)

I then record voice into Audacity via my MR816x

You can easily splice them together again in Camtasia's video editor (or whatever you use)

I did have a support post running on the Camtasia forum, but it's very fussy about where it takes it's audio from, and despite the fact I can choose the MR816x as a source of audio within the options, it simply doesn't work. The solution I use above is the one that was offered to me by numerous other people with the same problem.

I'm fine doing it that way though as i've not come across anything else on the PC that's as good as Camtasia is.

These are the results

I will tell Cakewalk Support Forums that you were reduced to using this, cryophonik! *laughs maniacally*

The "Hail-Mary" of sound-drivers, indeed.

So, if I understand you correctly, you're recording directly (well, via ASIO4ALL) from Cubase into Camtasia while you're recording the screen capture? That's the part that I have never been able to do.

@EZ - don't you dare! CJ will have my head on a stake. :nervous:

Yes that's correct.

There's an option within Camtasia to record the stereo out of your PC, which will obviously pick up ASIO4ALL.

To get the audio synced together I just say a 1,2,3 click and hit something on screen I can lock into (usually the close button on something.

I just realized that Camtasia Studio is $299! :eyespop: I'll need a more reasonable option.

Dave i looked into this a while back, NONE of the free or really cheap versions had external audio support :( I asked Airbase what he was using a year or so ago and i'm pretty sure he wrote back Camtasia. I guess for now you can record the video then do a voice over later and sync it in your daw.

If you find a solution though let me know, I actually need one for work
