Kindness is deceptive. I watched a show, that showed all of these gorgeous women, who had a ton of male attention all of their lives and they were cocky as F*** and complete bitches.. and the one time they didn't wear makeup, no guys were paying attention to them, because , the guys liked their vanity , and not them. When they realized this they got butthurt and cried, they found out that they weren't actually cool, and their entire lives were reduced to a makeup cabinet. Just like when you have some kind of power for someone to vampiristically prey on., You better realize how people are.
You obviously have no experience in dealing with people.
You'll get no where in any business pursuit if you stop to cater to every ass kissing F*** head, and good promoters realize that and only deal with someone who is of equal benefit to them right off the bat, so someone starting out, is S.O.L . To any promoter with..... HALF A F***** BRAIN. |
So then why is it so hard to get gigs if people will treat you nicer if they want something from you?
I have been a professional dj for over 8 years, and - without being arrogant - i know how to deal with people.
I've also been the 'head-dj' for over 4 years, being in charge of all dj's that were booked. But hey, you just make the assumption that i don't know what i'm talking about.
I've met a whole lot of club owners, promoters, etc... in my life, and most them will appreciate a nice and decent guy, instead of someone acting like he's the next Armin van Buuren.
Nice to see you use a tv-show to base your view on 'reality'...
YOU are the one selling your 'services', so if YOU are nice, chances are likelier that they will hire you to play their next event/clubnight/whatever.
You can be a nice guy without getting taken advantage of, or even abused for that matter.
Yes, some (or most, whatever you want) promoters will take advantage of the kids who are too nice and accept $20 for a gig.
Apparently you think the general message of my posts is to just do whatever the promoters want you to do. You don't seem to understand the difference between being 'nice' and 'kissing ass'.
Anyway, good luck finding a gig. :)

The promoters are wise to people who are "being nice" and "kissing ass" The two are the same thing. You can't tell, thats the point. You missed my point. Being "nice" does not constitute you as useful because you could just be an ass kisser for all they know. But I guess being one of those kids offering to do it for 20$ would make you useful to them.

On topic, it really depends on what crowd you're aiming for. Assuming trance, well, depending on your area, it could be very difficult.
Don't expect to be the next Tiesto or Armin van Buuren.
You'll probably have to start off playing local parties.
See if there are any local clubs that might be in need of a DJ.
Other than that, I can't really give any more advice. |

You clearly don't want to be a 'nice' guy, and that's fine.
You ask a question, i reply to the best of my knowledge about what i've learned in all those years, and yet you tell me i'm wrong.
But it seems you already have the theory on how to get gigs all worked out. I suggest you go try them out, and then come back to tell us how they worked for ya.

Very rarely do I come across a twat on this forum. Actually, i refrain as often as possible from using profanities. However I like to bend the rules every now and again to get a point across.

I'll tell you why. You asked your newb question fair enough. You got replies. You didn't like some of them. All of sudden you started lecturing people who were simply trying to be nice and share their opinion.
I for one was rude, no doubt about that and i suppose I should apologise, sorry. I have a sneaky suspicion you might have confused djxtension for me as I can't see where he was acting like a 'cunt' in any of his responses to your question. So in all honesty I think you should take your tone down a notch or two when all he was trying to do was share his experience.
No one on here has to prove themselves to anyone. If he's (djxtension) been head dj at a club I believe him and so does every other regular member on here.
You don't just prance onto a forum, ask a question looking for opinions then slander whoever tries to share their experiences with you. Especially a member who's nearly been a part of this community for a decade. Back the off.
I'm going to leave it at that. And for the fun of it, staying on topic. I'll give you 2 pieces of advice.
Firstly, Bring lots of people to your night/venue that you play at. The more friends you have that will support you the more gigs you get as the promoter will make money off them from the door charge.
Secondly, Produce. More and more dj's are playing out these days thanks to laptops as mentioned before hand. Producing your own stuff is a great way of promoting yourself first but also it's a lot easier to create a following if you have your own music up on the web. Most people that get a regular slot here in Dublin produce, the ones that don't know people/friends who give them gigs on the nights they run.
That is all.
I think you've got all the advice you wanted from this thread so let's leave the hand bags at home from now on and keep things constructive. |

I have never claimed to be a 'big time DJ'.
All i said was that i've been at it for a few years, and think i have a fairly decent understanding of what it takes to get gigs.
If you don't believe me, that's fine. But there is no need for your offensive tone.
Take or leave my advice, i couldn't care less about what you do with it.
Now, for one last time: if you want to get gigs, prepare to put your ego aside and start small.

about producing i don't see how it helps you in the low end of the gigs pyramid, i mean, it's obvious that 90% of the big djs are also producers and i don't want to discuss that it's obvious that producing is the best way to spread yourself but:
In a medium size club who actually cares if the track that sounds is yours? Unless you do the trick of picking the micro and saying "hello guyz, what's up? This is my brand new track, make some noise!!" or any other mc cookie cutter sentence , and honestly your track is probably worse than the other stuff you've played, what i see as an option is being a die hard producer and announce yourself as a live act so people come to see you specifically.
I am a producer and never got a gig thanks to this, i am not that good but anyways i don't see it happening in the future |
