Cheaper roaming charges coming to a wireless carrier near you?

Earlier this week the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) released a report showing that Canadians pay the most in the world for data roaming rates. For 1MB of usage we dish out $24.61 (U.S.), about twice as the OECD average of $13.52 (U.S.). Kinda upsetting… but good news has come out of this from TELUS. They are “within days” of dropping their roaming rates. Brent Johnston, TELUS VP of Mobility Marketing, says he “absolutely agrees” with the OECD report but puts the high cost blame on Rogers monopoly of international roaming deals. Johnson stated that a cut of “more than 50 per cent on data” will be coming soon, and this “still allows us to be profitable”. They must be making crazy money of roaming.

Hopefully this does happen and other carriers follow suit.

If they do reduce it to $12.31 per MB. Still not close to the OECD average though which is really $9 something. Plus they should really change the prices for roaming SMS, 0.75$ for outgoing is idiotic. It should really be 0.25$ outgoing without the roaming plan and like 0.12$ if you have the roaming SMS plan.

not sure where they get the $24/mb for roaming

When i used my iphone in Vegas, it was like $6/MB

1 min of phone + 3 web pages was ~ $11

Do you have the US roaming data plan? One thing I wish I opted for the Canada/US data plan when I signed up for another 3 year plan. It was an extra $10/month and I wouldn't have to worry about getting raped while roaming in the US

Honestly you can see on Rogers website the lowest they charge people is 0.80 cents per MB while roaming in the US and 0.10 cents per sent SMS while in the US. The lowest price they have should be set for everyone and make it cheaper for people with plans, but wont happen. Seeing it is a company and it needs money to operate lol

Even 0.10 cents per sent SMS while roaming in the US is nuts. Thankfully I have Google Voice and don't have to worry about getting hit, just my friends lol

You need a travel pack:

lol @ Telus they can set their rates to whatever they want, Rogers' monopoly doesn't affect them. And sure you could switch to Telus but anyone who's had to deal with their customer service would likely rather get fuct by Rogers' roaming instead...

You can do it now and just specify the dates you're travelling. I believe the cost for these packs is the same whether you're there for 1 day or 30 so give yourself a bunch of time on the tail end of your trip in case you stay late for some reason...

No rush. You can activate it online a day before you go -- just double-check that you get immediately get a confirmation email + text that the pack was successfully added.

You'll then have to cancel it when on return so it doesn't carry forward to a future pay cycle (it may already auto-expire on the current cycle, when I do it I'll let u know)
