In my last review, I was told I needed to be more "aggressive" and that I need to work on my "poker face" when dealing with customers.

You've never had a performance review? How is one supposed to gauge their growth/progress without regular reviews? Performance review time is usually also "Give me a in raise" time.
Moral Hazard
I have to do annual reviews on my people... I hate it. Trying to summarize an entire year of work and development on one document is a) hard, and b) inaccurate usually. The key is to approach it as a learning opportunity... as a device to drive growth. If you got a poor score it is likely because your supervisor believes you are performing at a level below where you could be. The low score is often given as a way to push forward with a development plan. FYI... no one ever gets perfect, it defeats the purpose.

None in my biz...

I get an automatic raise every year...

If they don't like me, I don't get put on the next job...

Ours aren't a number rating. There's just areas in which you excel and areas where you could improve. We get an automatic raise as well to match inflation, but we get a larger one based on our performance review.

I've always had performance reviews too, usually on the third month (once the probation period is over), and then annually. But I was never rated. It must be a Toronto thing.. they LOVE to rate , from people to fruit juice. I've never seen this phenomenon anywhere else. :o
