you could just layer it with a hihat

Atlantis... Use it in stereo? It will not consume too much room at the lows?

Double mono consumes as much "room" as stereo, it just plays identical, rather than different between L&R

Consume too much room? If you are using those samples, they're ready to roll. As long as you aren't boosting or have other sounds in the same key and frequency area, it should be fine. You want that frequency occupation, just not as the same time as your actual bassline. Hence, ducking. They should have a relationship back and forth though, just not at the same time.
edit: not to say you can't boost. I just mean if you really wanted, you could use the low end of one and the mid/high end of another, and it should work okay as long as you monitor the phasing.

hi-pass filter to 15k, removes every single problem

let's put it this way, if you pan a stereo sample all the way to the left, duplicate it and do the same thing to the right, it becomes mono because each instance loses the pair channel, the other side of the signal. so that way they are both "mono", alone. 1 instead of 2. therefor, if you mixes 2 of those together, it inherently becomes mono. it has nothing to do with high or low frequencies, it's simply a matter of left and right.

or someone could just build a library of good mono kicks. problem solved!

question is: why this fascination with MONO kicks in the first place?
It really brings NOTHING to the table production wise....
(RANN you can come in now, got another MONO Moron here :D again...... )

It's an artistic decision. We all decide how we want to pan our sounds, how wide we want certain sounds to be. Surely you're not calling all those producers who have used a centered kick in a song "morons"?

jupiterone
it's really just about what sounds and fits best in your mix

you serious? Kicks should always be in mono, at least the lower frequencies anyway
