Is email a distraction? SelfControl is an OS X application which blocks access to incoming and/or outgoing mail servers and websites for a predetermined period of time. For example, you could block access to your email, facebook, and twitter for 90 minutes, but still have access to the rest of the web. Once started, it can not be undone by the application, by deleting the application, or by restarting the computer – you must wait for the timer to run out.

This thing might save my ing life/career. Does anyone know of a free version for Windows? I found a few, but none of them have timers, which necessitates writing down long passwords every time I want to cut myself off.

like this makes me LOL. Are you really that weak?

I spend a stupid amount of time on the internet, partially because of having a business, but I have no qualms whatsoever leaving it. I'd rather be in the forest with my camera :p

I have a smartphone too, so I could be hooked in at any time I like. But I just don't - I like to be out and about, and not tied to the net. I disabled Gmail pushing to my phone a long time ago, it just got annoying. It's handy here and there, to look up, and be functional with it (like maps, or whatever), but FB and Twitter? Bah.

Though, I will say, during the January floods here in Brisbane, I was very ing happy to have a smartphone, with access to the internet. We had no power for about a week, and it was good to know what was happening around the place, via news reports, etc. Especially since there was some looting happening in this area - Wouldn't want to leave the house for long.

I felt quite cut off from information, without the net available.

And I won't lie - I made a few Facebook status updates during that time :o
jdat

He may have found that already. Give him a few hours, I guess he'll respond then, when the app times out.

My problem is that I need the Internet to research my various forms of writing, but not all the fun and trivial that comes with it.

stfu michael moore.

"A firewall is a device or set of devices designed to permit or deny network transmissions based upon a set of rules".

I'd think any ol' nanny software should be able to that for you. Unless the "can't turn it off"-option is what you're after. THen you're already too addicted to not find ways around it.
