What is there really to think about?
The same article could be written from the perspective of a DJ from Trois-Rivières saying how great Montreal is.
No matter in what field you work in, you have to consider reaching markets that need you.
As a Visual FX artist, I am worth a lot more and would do more interesting work in LA or Australia, which I did. And then came back. Some of my friends never did.
Nobody said it was easy being a DJ/producer/artist, and that you should earn great money from it. Or that being a true original artist will get you more gigs than somebody that sucks and pull more people in the club.
Either you find the market that needs you, or you create the market here. Far too many producers think people owe them something because they locked themselves in a studio for a year doing a bassline.
Indeed, Richie Hawtin doesn't have to do is own damn flyer, but I am pretty sure that a lot of DJs in Berlin do.
Basically I don't get the point of comparing Canada to Berlin. |

I know you are joking, but what I said is actually quite the opposite of being sored,
I love Montreal, I think it's great. And instead of saying that we 'don't get it', always worked so that the crowd eventually does. And if I fail, I will never blame the city for it.
North America is just very different and Berlin is not a worldwide reality.
And by the way I know DJs in Berlin that have a hard time throwing a party with 75 people, and international DJs/producers that still work in restaurants during the week. |

it's a relativist (or perhaps even a realist) point of view, which allows one to put a great many things into perspective, really. Many could also consider Montreal as the Las Vegas of North America, for instance :p
And I think there are some linguistic, cultural and politcal aspects at play that make it so, imo.
That said, this cultural imperialism, or maybe better put, defection, may have some benefits to it too, actually. I'll let the smart ppl on this forum firgure that out... my ears are still ringing from Circus :p |

Because Las Vegas is not in North America? I know Nevada doesn't answer to anyone but I don't think it's a continent yet... |

almost every artist (directors, painters, writers, producers, etc) leaves Montreal at one point or another when they realize that to achieve success on a bigger scale Montreal is really not the place
let me compare it to actors since this is a field i know
will I make 1, 000,0000$ acting in Quebec as an actor? No. But if I leave to say Los Angeles or New York and continue to pursue and work hard in this business I have a much better chance outside of the city (and country!)
I love MTL, and I will always have a base here, but I really don't see myself living here my whole life.. it just doesnt make sense
I'd imagine this works almost the same way for producers/DJs.. especially in a niche market :P |
