So for the past few years it's been seeming like trance has been dying out- with other genre's taking over..

but, recently i've been noticing - it seems like trance is starting to get very big again.
not sure if it's just me or not -

I live in San Diego and before there weren't that many trance gigs but it seems like there's one every other weekend now. Not only that but they get packed too- at EDC all the trance stages were packed. About a year ago I saw a great rise in the dutch-house genre but recently I've been seeing a lot of young teens and such get into trance as well (in the past few months).

I went to an 18+ trance show the other day in san diego and most of the crowd seemed to be very young - I would expect more people in their higher 20's or so..

what do you all think ?

I think we are at least seeing a rise in the quality of trance productions. It was complete ASS for awhile there. Finding a lot more tunes I like in the last several months. But, there's becoming a bigger separation in BPMs. Seeing a lot more stuff getting produced at 128-129 and below that's trance. And then other stuff is 134 and above. Lot less 130-132 stuff it seems, especially 132.

really? my feeling was the opposite ... i feel like trance has gotten a bit slower, not as many guys banging it out at 140 anymore.

I concur with part of what DaveT said. Trance from 2007-2010 was really MEH except for a handful of exceptions.

I noticed the quality of productions in Trance got a lot better in 2011 from younger producers. Think DJ Eco (NYC), Casey Keyworth [Breakfast] (DC), all the artists from Otographic Music [Japan].

I think there are a lot of young people who are just starting to discover *all* of Trance and are not yet jaded and there's good new music fo them too. I mean even if you started listening to Trance in the meh years you could listen to a lot of good trance from a whole decade as a noob.

i felt like '07-'08 was solid and '09-'10 sucked super bad
But there are some great artists making their way to the top now.

Trance won'r die, but it lost it's steam. Popularity wise, its lost it's grip on the scene. Fine with me for the most part, as long as i have my club shows...

Trance has lost a lot of ground in the mainstream to house, electro, dubstep, etc. The quick rise of people like Guetta, Deadmau5, and the like have made certain DJs leave trance behind (Tiesto) and others flood the market with mediocre vocal tracks to try and stay relevant(Dash Berlin, Armin, A&B).

I think it's going to be a good thing in the long run. Progressive is making a comeback, and there are promising producers in that genre (which is really trance in its essence). Trance has gone stale, but usually when that happens to a genre it starts to split and has to re-discover itself. It causes people to experiment and try to do new things. At first that means lame stuff like throwing a dubstep breakdown in it, but that fad won't last long. The underground will start playing around with it and I think eventually it will re-emerge better than it was before.

And remember, if all else fails, the genre will split and fracture. When rock became stale and poppy, alternative rock emerged and became popular. When hip-hop become stale and poppy, indie hip-hop emerged and became popular.

There is also an adequate amount of information for the common person to start getting into advanced sound production techniques on youtube. Even with hardware synths. The ability to start is a lot easier than it used to be and I think thats coming into effect.

I miss psytrance when it was big, it's all but dead at this point and it's truly a shame.

Trance, many seem to think Trance is about being fast and hard. This is a misconception..... When trance drops to a lower BpM its about buiding to a progressive emotional sense and expressing it. This leads to the energy of the trance essence.

This is why I still say that, energy + emotion = trance.
