When palpating your lump, does it
a) hurt?
b) feel hard like bone? [stupid jokes incoming] or rather soft?
c) show signs of infection: hyperemia, reddening etc.?
d) feel moveable when firmly palpating the skin above it?
Also, how long did it take for your lump to grow to it's actual size?
Referring to your doctor's examination, did he perform any ultrasound measurements on the suspect lump? (he only described the inner and outer structure as far as you wrote)
I mean things like size, diameter or volume. Apparently it is no lymph node. "There was no lymphadenopathy within the neck."
So far, it can be anything from a simple or complicated infection to a lateral neck cyst or even a Hodgkin's lymphoma. The majority of diagnosis, even most malignant tumors in this region, can be treated quite well. |

a) it used to hurt. Not so much anymore as its been there for 4 weeks
b) its hard but not as hard as a bone
c) it was reddening a bit at first but not anymore
d) it does feel a little moveable
he did a standard thyroid ultrasound but it wasnt a thyroid problem. They did no measuring and seem to should cover all the basis.
I get a cat scan this week. |

As for the clinical presentation, it's not easy to make a diagnosis yet. It might be some form of complicated lateral neck cyst.
After the scan, doctors will probably take a biopsy of it/remove the suspect mass for histopatholocial examinations - then you will know what to deal with.
criteria for local malignancy:
a) normally no pain for a longer period of time; while growing pain can arise from compression of nerves or stronger sensible innervated tissue
b) very hard, sometimes literally as hard as bone
c) calor, rubor, dolor, tumor and functio laesa - these are criteria for an acute infection. Normally a malignant tumor is missing them
d) due to it's invasive histomorphologic growth, malignant tumors are often not moveable at all |

One of the leading causes of "neck lumps" is enlarged lymph nodes. Possibly caused by bacterial infection or some cancers.
Could also be a sebaceous cyst if it`s in the skin.
Thyroid problems and cancers have been mentioned but don`t be too worried if it turns out to be a cancer connected to the thyroid as it can be easily fixed with surgery.

I recently found out I have a thyroid problem. Hypothyroid to be specific. If I remember correctly the cat scan should give the most accurate look.
I know it's stupid to say don't worry about it but try to stay positive and don't stress over it too much. I had an ultrasound on my nuts, and the wait was unbearable at times. |

You see, that's the weird part. I was told I have hypo-thyroid, but don't show the weight gain. If anything I experience sluggishness especially in the morning; sometimes it's impossible to get out of bed.
After reading about hyper/hypo-thyroidism, I'm a little skeptic on the diagnosis. I might get another blood test to see if it is hypo. Also curious if the production of thyroid hormones can fluctuate.
edit: btw I weigh about 170lbs and I hike,bicycle,and play a lot of tennis. |
