Sympatico High Speed & Ultra Question

I have the regular High Speed [ ] edition of Sympatico...
I called their help line several times but it seems like no one there knows what they are talking about.

My question is to those TA's here who already have the Ultra Service.

Please tell me what speeds you usually get with the service.

Yes I know it is a 3meg modem downstream and 640kbps upstream but what is it really??

High speed is 128kbps down & 13kpbs up I believe

thanks

That is correct. If you go to their website: www.sympatico.ca , there'll be a whole bunch of stuff which you can read about.

As for Sympatico DSL, I am totally diappointed with them. Just spoke to them on the phone last night to CANCEL the stoopid service.

Normal Sympatico High Speed: Max of 5 Gigs Upload and Download!!! WTF?

I checked this week and I've overshot by almost 20 gigs. To hell with Sympatico. I've decided to go with Rogers since they have unlimited download size, plus I get 50 more channels with the package.

The 3 Times faster new Sympatico Hi-Speed will allow a Max of 10 gigs upload/download a month.

If you do exceed that figure, don't bother with them. They'll suck all your money up in no time.

I was just thinking of setting a post like that.... ;)

Anyways, most DSL providers in Ontario will be enforcing a LIMIT on their download/upload sizes of their clients, claiming that as 5% of the population over-exceeds the file size. This limit is to control the congestion and what-not. Just pisses me off.

Sorry about the ranting but until 18 months ago, all was well.

Their new Hi-Speed seems enticing but it seems that they are going through a lot of customers leaving them as Rogers Customer Service did not seem surprised that I called...lol

Anyways, it's a fight for the almost 4 million population in Toronto Area.

Anyone here using Rogers Cable? Can you list the advantages/problems/fast downloads experiences here?

Thanks!

I'm on Rogers, and it's pretty damn good. Fast downloads and uploads, although they have some speed restrictions in the works also. I haven't heard about quotas though, so it looks like Rogers is a safe but for the moment. They are also much much much more reliable than during the @home days - almost never any down-time for me now.

i left sympatico as well....i can't live with a 5 GB limit...
i used 30 GB in one month and that was during exams so u can imagine how much i would have used :eyespop:

rogers apparently sux in my area, thats the only reason why i havent called them yet. also, arn't they imposing a bandwidth limit soon as well? i dunno maybe im misinformed....

but newayz, for ppl who are trying to find alternatives i have 1 thats was real bad and 1 thats good (so far)

The bad - Canadian Unlimited Internet Corp
i called these ppl a few days before i canceled sympatico, expecting to be offline for a few days b4 i was back on
one month later im still offline.
1) these ppl didn't bother to inform me that they couldn't send me a modem cuz they apparently didn't recieve the cheque for the deposit for the modem (2 week delay)
2) Their shipment of modems from the US was stopped at the border for some reason, and my modem happened to be among those being held (1.5 weeks). I wasn't told about this until i asked.
3) Canada Post lost my modem when it was finally sent out, so i was put on a list for their next shipment from the US. Again, I wasn't told until I asked. (1 week)
Finally i canceled with these ppl, and now i have to fight with them to get back my cheque for the deposit for the modem since they already cashed it.
Also, during one of my many phonecalls the saleswomen called me a jackass. How's that for customer service?
Never sign up with these ppl i want them to suffer for their poor customer service and rude employees

The good - Spectranet

I called them, withing 5 minutes they set me up a dial up account (which im using rite now)
I was told that someone would come to my house in a week, since Bell had to activiate my phoneline for dsl service (since they own the line), and give me my modem. The guy came on the exact day he said he would (a little late but i didn't mind)
He set up everything for me, but when we tried the modem it didnt work cuz Bell screwed up in activiating my phoneline. Now i gotta wait till monday. But so far these ppl have been very good to me, only Bell screwed up so far. I recommend these ppl (without even trying their service LOL)

tru say ..

the only solution here folks is to find a smaller ISP provider.. u can get the same service (if not better) from an independent company. As long as we keep supporting access of the big guys ie. Rogers & Bell they're not gonna improve service anytime soon ! and don't expect those caps to go away either !! and yea this board has had the same debate about a billion times over.. go to smaller providers! support the little guy .. or gal ! :P

ps. and juss for the record i;m not saying all smaller companies are good as pyromancer stated above with his probs.. but itz all about finding the right one and asking for other ppl's opinions.. here's a good site too for finding one:

Obviously it was an advertising campaign meant to con us unsuspecting consumers.

In the end its all about the mighty bling.

Not really... it's two different things.

By not being 'shared' they mean that each user has a separate connection to them, whereas cable is supposedly shared with your neighbours.

The caps are because the monthly fee they charge is only enough to cover a certain amount of bandwidth. If you go and transfer 30 gigs in a month they are probably losing money on your account, hence the cap.

It sucks, but from a business standpoint I understand what they are doing. You can't really expect unlimited bandwidth for $40-$50 a month if the raw cost of bandwidth is $5-8 a gig.

this is BS, Bell has its own infrastructure for the internet traffic. They built their network directly on the backbone with OC-192 and such fat connections...

when you own the wires and hubs, you don't pay for bandwidth...
