Im about 60% piracy to be honest. I would never buy music from a major dj/producer such as avb, markus, A&b etc, But I would pay top $$$ to go to their shows (sometimes as VIP) if I have to, so i think there's a balance there. In my opinion, Piracy is somewhat of a symbiosis when it comes to big names. I wouldn't be at their gigs if it wasn't for that album that I enjoyed so much which I happened to download illegally from a random forum. When it comes just to non-DJ-producers or a low profile artist, I feel almost obligated to buy it.

Pretty much the perfect response, I think. I feel the same way. Markus is my favorite dj to see live, but I've only purchased 2 of his CDs and very few tracks. I don't mind obtaining his stuff illegally for a few reasons:
1) I support him whenever he's around, and have even traveled to see him.
2) Most of his tracks are featured in his radio shows anyway
3) I'm not a dj looking to pirate tracks and play them out.
The stuff I buy on beatport typically falls into one of say 3 categories: 1) tracks i've heard recently and totally in love. must have. 2) releases from labels that rub me the right way (culprit, bar25, bitten, desolat, suol, mobilee, even some stuff on coldharbour occasionally) 3) older tracks i hear in mixes and really want but perhaps can't find to download illegally |

| I buy as much as I can. However wish more classic tracks were being released in a digital HQ WAV format. |

| I dont buy crap- but then again the only stuff I would DL are live sets so I dont really feel that bad especially since its a set from an event usually countries away from me which I couldnt attend even if I wanted to. I support them by paying to see the ones I like when they are here. I never dl singles since thats just boring for me to listen to since Im not a dj or producer, but if any of you guys had something for sale I would support it- maybe :D...ok maybe not, but I would go out to see you play, or at least try. Im being honest at least. Happy Friday. |

I pirated all of my music for YEARS, but just this February I started legally purchasing music through Beatport.
I justified piracy with "They make enough as it is," which I still believe to be true for several Top Ranked DJs, and like someone else already said, I would pay top dollar to go to their gigs. -- I would buy merchandise too, but sadly aside from Trackitdown, which is too expensive, I'm not really aware of where I can find Merch that will support my favorite artists -- I believe things balanced out.
The reason why I began to purchase music was mostly due to the fact that I was sick and tired of not being able to find rare tracks on torrents, or find an unmixed version at the least. - The same could be said with brand new releases, but I knew they would trickle down after a month or so.
Still, once I signed up for Beatport, I became addicted due to its simplicity. In the past 5 months I have purchased over 600 tracks and continue to spend about $10-20 a day on Beatport, or sometimes iTunes.
However, I refuse to pay money for albums or compilations. I want the extended mixes, not some album/mix edit. I don't see the logic in paying for that when I will just buy the full version when it releases, so I still download those. - them for trying to get twice the buck for their bang.
EDIT:
Also, artists like Mike Foyle, Leon Bolier, Chris Schweizer, Karanda, and others who release big tunes for free are highly respected and appreciated by me. |

I DJ as a hobby, and buy about 50% of the music I listen to. I tend to buy tracks from up and coming artists, or labels that I enjoy (Silk, Anjuna, Arrival). That way, at least I know my purchase supports the small time producer/artists.
On the other hand, if its a track thats come from a big name producer, then I usually just download it. At least in my head, I figure that these guys get enough from touring, etc that my measly $2 wont mean much.
The only exception to that rule are artist albums or mixed compilations. I paid for the ASOT 2011 download. I could have easily gotten it for free. I like to support all the individual artists on the CD. Same goes for albums such as Group Therapy or thoughts become things 2. |

I like how many of you justify to yourselves why you pirate songs. "Oh they make enough money". "Oh, I only pirate mix compilations", "Oh, I only pirate 20% of my songs".
You're all thieving crooks who have no respect for the artist, the scene nor the music.
"Oh its only $2, they won't miss it". This one was the most ridiculous. If its only $2, buy it. |

Oh here's another one. "I don't have that much disposable income so I pirate a few songs".
It's the same as me saying, I can't afford a ferrari so I'll go steal one.
Get over yourselves. |
