Very shortly after 9/11, I once (unknowingly) walked through security with a 3" folding knife in my computer bag and was never questioned about it. My flight ended up getting cancelled while I was at the gate and I took a rental car for the trip instead. I realized later when I put the rental receipt into my bag and saw the knife in the front pocket. I'm still amazed that they didn't see it. Happened at DFW.

DFW is slightly more painful than ass rape. Combined with the unpredictable weather, it is always amazing to wait 8 hours for a flight.

I often travel with my virus ti and novation launchpad. in bigger airpots, like amsterdam, they're pretty savvy about things like that...but at smaller? one security guard once told me, "not even going to begin to guess what those are!" which sort of seems like the opposite thing you should be doing :wtf:

EDIT:

I also am usually with one of my arduino boards whilst traveling....and I contain it in a little altoids tin. gotta say, it looks pretty suspicious (and actually, because arduinos are so flexible, I wouldn't be surprised if people had made bombs from them before), but haven't been asked about it yet...

oh yeah, don't try to fly with a nukalert :o

ah, i never flew internally in NZ, just SYD-AKL, then AKL-LAX. tangent: our entire plane's cabin was fumigated upon landing in SYD. that was fun. :wtf: do they still do that?

Yes.

Why's that weird? If you're arriving from another country and connecting you need to be in compliance with the security requirements of the country you're departing from.

Some places require you to reclear security on domestic flights either because of dumb airport layouts or because security is handled by other companies/airport authorities within the same country so you get the once over again...that's the case with LHR.

My favorite flying experiences have all been small domestic flights in Africa. No showing up hours before takeoff. No security. No lines. No BS.

You show up to an unmanned airstrip five minutes after takeoff was scheduled. Your plane is already waiting for you, so you get right on. You can sit wherever you like. In fact, there's no co-pilot, and if you ask the pilot he'll usually let you sit in the co-pilot's seat. When you land, you just get right off and you're on your way--no 30 minute wait before you get to a gate, no waiting for granny to get her 50 kg roller bag out of the overhead compartment.

In my opinion, it's the only civilized way to fly.

Reminds me of flying private :)

I have to take Dairy Milk over to my brother each time and he's got half of his uni students/friends hooked on it too. Luckily he's found a german shop selling haribo so that one isn't quite as important as it used to be. For his mother in law, I have to take Bassetts Liqorice allsorts & Harrods teas.
