I was thinking of picking up the CD release on the 27th. I'm not expecting much and don't have high expectation(plus I hate hype) I know there will be haters but I'm looking forward to hearing some fresh stuff picked by Oakenfold.
There just hasn't been an actual DJ mix for sometime. Now that every DJ is a Producer, their mix comps only favor who they are associated with. I know that's nothing new but there should be variety to these mixes.
EDIT: There's a fellow TA's track on this as well; Magnus:toothless |

The last thing I bought was his Creamfields mix comp in '04. |

| I was just listening to "Tranceport" and "Another World" this weekend. Oakey was amazing back then... I don't expect much from this mix but I'm willing to see what he has brought us. |

One of the first EDM purchases that I made (I'm relatively new to the scene). I love it.
Sadly, I haven't heard anything as good as that from Paul since. |

You NEED to check out his earlier releases:
1995 A Voyage into Trance
1998 Tranceport
1998 Global Underground 007: New York
1999 Resident: Two Years of Oakenfold at Cream
2000 Perfecto Presents: Travelling
2000 Perfecto Presents: Another World
2001 Perfecto Presents Ibiza
Tranceport is one of the most famous DJ mixes of it's time... it ushered into the world some amazing "classic" tracks. |

If you really want to hear another dynamic mix of his try:
Global Underground 004: Live In Oslo
One of my favorite mixes by him with chill drum n bass and Goa Trance.
And his Perfecto Fluoro mix from '96 is pretty awesome. |

I found Tranceport online, and listened to it at the gym for the last hour.
Great mix.
I remember way back before I knew what the hell the EDM scene was (back in my teenage hip-hop years), this girl I worked with gave me a cassette tape. I loved it, but have since never been able to find any of the tracks that were on it. I think four of them were in this mix. That was excitement enough to finally hear them again after all of these years.
I'll search for the other mixes you mentioned. I have to ask though, what happened to Paul? Something to his style and the way he approaches music obviously changed between now and then. |

Perfecto Fluoro is pretty enjoyable but GU:004 has the worst ing transition I've ever heard on a commercially released mix CD. You know which one. |

I still love listening to Tranceport, it makes me remember what trance used to be. I would try and hunt down "Perfecto Presents: Another World" next, my next favorite by him.
I really think what happened to Oakenfold is the same thing that has happened to most big trance DJ's... the scene has just been ruined by a lot of crappy, homogeneous, over produced, unemotional productions. The quality and simplicity and ATMOSPHERE in today's music is really lacking. Also a big issue is that everything is so accessable to fans now so it's hard to "surprise" us when a new mix comp comes out because more than likely we have already heard a lot of the tracks (though that is certainly not always true). I think all of this is PART of the reason Oakey has fallen off the wagon...
Outside of that, he has been doing this for a long time... he is experimenting, trying out stuff and having fun but I think he has just lost that drive to make a name for himself because he already has done all of that. Of course this is all just opinion but you see it happening to a lot of the big names. They just get watered down. However like I said, the big thing IMO is lack of GOOD music and public accessibility.

I actually haven't heard Perfecto Fluoro. I need to hunt it down. I wasn't a fan of GU004, however he certainly delivered one of his most VARIED mixes with that release.
I will listen to it again and see if I remember what transition you are referencing.
We all know Oakey is not and has never been the transition master, his success has always been riding on his track selection. |
