OK, I'm looking to buy a new modem and I would like to know what's the BEST one I can use for Windows and Linux. I'm looking for an external modem. Should I get a V.92 modem? Here's some basic system specs.: [EDIT: INCLUDED MORE SPECS]

What else do you need to know? If you need more, let me know. Also, tell me the modems to STAY AWAY from too. List all prices (if you include them) in USD. For example: 50 USD. |

| Hmm, no matter what kinda 56k you get the speeds will be ty. It's better to spend the extra money and get ADSL / Cable. :D |
|

| anything slower than cable/dsl sucks. And compaq and other retail pc sucks. |

| Yea, so if you spend 50 dollars on a 56K modem, it will have the same performance as a 15 dollar 56k modem. |

me and me mate have the Actiontec PCI internal call waiting modem, and i have to admit it is the most practical piece of electronics EVER.
it works fine under linux, they even tell you how to set it up. it rings when someone calls you when you're online.
one little bug under windows 2000 though (dunno about XP) - if you have some older firmare for the unit, and you're not online, the computer will freeze completely if the modem is plugged into the phone line and someone calls you. you can flash it though, but it can only be done so far under windows 98 |

Kool... I'll check that modem out.
TO OTHER RESPONDERS: I'm getting broadband soon but, ever heard the saying "Don't burn your bridges."? If so, then you'll see why I want to get a new 56K modem for backup in case something happens to my broadband connection, modem, or whatever... |

| Yea all modems are pretty much the same. Dont be fooled by a salesperson and be convinced into getting a US Robotic modem. Although its a good brand and all, when your modem is zapped, id much rather lose a $15 modem than an expensive one. |

MODEMS ARE NOT CRAP!
off course they aren't fast enough but but but ! you're complaints are directly in relation with WINmodems it appears....
old school modems were better
it's someone who's first modem was a 2400 baups modem that's telling you so :p
I started out adsl with a USB modem and I had never had so many problems with a modem of whatever sort, are you talking about that crap ? ( that seems to be a big issue lately with usb modems )
I switched to Ethernet type modem + router as fast as possible and have been happy ever since.:toothless |
