I agree 100%. No, you don't want to rely on them in lieu of your ears to make decisions for you, but they are indispensable IMO. I highly recommend checking out the Blue Cat Audio Freq Analyst bundle. It contains two plugins - the FreqAnalystPro and the FreqAnalystMulti, which lets you overlay the RTA from multiple tracks within a project simultaneously. I often use it in my mastering environment (Sound Forge) as well to compare the frequency response curves of my stereo render to that of my reference tracks. Possibly the best $129 I've spent in years.

Precisely. Thanks for the link, quite interested in this...

If you're short on funds but want to get an effect similar to what cryo's talking about (albeit without as many of the bells and whistles as the Pro version has) there's a free version of BlueCat's Frequency analyst that will allow you to adjust the opacity on one instantiation with another one placed directly behind this for a quick A/B comparison. - the ghetto version.

You bet it is

@derail - just because you highpass something at 50hz doesnt mean you take out everything below 50hz (unless your using a mad steep filter of course) - just look at the frequency analyser :p

The bass would always be the lowest part of my track, i take some bottom end off the kick to make room for the bass in the mix. I disagree that it should be the lowest. You want to feel the subbass, if its done properly it will be nice and clean. The low end of most kicks tends to be very muddy. They def sound better after some low end eq and of they are compressed properly they'll still have a strong presents in the mix.

All good. My response was more towards Rann's 48 dB highpass filter. That'll cut pretty much everything.

The amount of low end I cut out depends totally on what's there. Some songs require no low cuts on the kick & bass at all. Others require a decent amount of cut. It's one of the most variable things in my production process, to the point where I can't say I "generally" go one way or the other.

yeah absolutely, all depends on the track, some kick samples are short enough as to not need any cuts at all etc etc

Guys.. You can and you should cut everything @ 40-50hz in 48db filter. The super low end is totally gone, yes but... once you limit your song on limiter, it's all back. If you don't believe me, just test it by yourself..

I don't use a limiter... I like showing off my peni- I mean dynamic range.

Very funny.. By cutting what has been told, you reach higher rms level.

it all depends on the track...the instruments and sounds around the kick.

sometimes my kick lives in the 120's, sometimes in the 50's
