The problem that this creates is that a vast majority of these guys do not know how to adapt to a live setting and are mediocre at best at pacing the dance floor.
Danny's 2003 marathon night still ranks among one of the better after-hours nights this city has seen in my eyes. I make fun of him because of his I'm bigger than the game attitude, but he can still deliver. In my eyes, the quicker we can get rid of the superstar DJ, the music and parties will be better.
do you know why people who dont listen to this music find DJ culture and the huge booking fees a really weird thing? Because it makes absolutely no sense. |
excellent post, some very good posts from the four of you. Djing outside the conventional dj box can definitely be refreshing to hear vis-a-vis the usual linear-sounding tech/techno house sets we often get today, but it can also be annoying to listen to if not done properly ..and Tenaglia's done the latter for me before, not unlike the reviews I read about Ricardo's set in Toronto.
Different music, different genres, we do it all the time but saying this one dj is "better" than the other when they play completely different styles may not be the best adjective to use. |

Apparently Tenaglia started djing in the 70s at a roller-skating rink :p |

I don't think I chose the best examples hehe... I really don't find AVB or SVD impressive to begin with other than the energy they bring to their venues (like Louis mentioned)
but even someone like Victor Calderone and D-Formation (who I love and have seen at Stereo many times) doesn't compare to Danny. If I compare a D-Formation set to Danny T, Dimas set sounds like the same 4x4 routine I've heard since I got into this scene. Danny on the otherhand is completely unconventional. This coupled w his incredible stage presence makes me go WOW. He really brings it...
Does this make 4x4 artist bad? Of course not, they have their market and their crowd and good for them. I just feel enlightened after experiencing Danny T. He kinda proves that 1+1 doesn't have to each 2
p.s: i love you too martin even though I don't think you love as much as u used to sniff sniff |
I'm pissed that I was working and I couldn't make it. I really understand what you're saying but telling us that he doesn't compare to anyone. I love it when djs go a bit unconventional or try gutsy moves @ an event. When they do and it works out well, it makes the night and his set soo unbelievable. That's the beef I had with the resident djs @ Stereo. Chus/Victor/Dimas/Vibe... they're very good, don't get me wrong but you're rarely going to get something out of the ordinary. I remember when Sasha was playing there a couple of months ago and he played a couple of old school trance songs, that made be go crazy because it's really unconventional and it's these type of djs that get the best of recognition ( BUT NOT ENOUGH ).
As for Armin, SVD, it's become such a pop culture. I don't think seeing 5000 people go emo to them is something special because NSYNC and Britney spears does that as well. I agree with Jay that Armin wasn't always crap ... nor was Tiesto. They use to play some massive stuff in the late 90's, early 2000's.
p.s: HOPE Carl Cox will deliver one hell of an epic set!! |

tiesto never could mix...at least armin knows how to do that even though all he does is the iso9001 "unicorn bass switch".
I can't believe I'm praising armin. time to do drugs again. |

I think the storm yesterday affected people in more ways then we might think. Dutch Dimension by Tiesto is very very good imo. |

| it felt as if time didn't exist, and at the same time as if I traveled back and forth between time - a timeless timed set. |

Him and his buddy looked like they were having a blast playing this one. I can only imagine what this track sounded like in Paradise Garage! What an uplifting party grooovee. Couldn't find on Youtube, but you can still listening from this link
