I'm very glad I went to this.
Nitin once again played a great opening set. This guy is on fire recently, and is getting better almost every time i see him. The extra half an hour he played was amazing, and it didn't bother me or anyone else that Lee was a bit delayed. Excellent job.
Lee played a deep, chuggy, and often minimal set on Saturday night. And when I say minimal, I don't mean the cheesy/overplayed way. I mean fat, tough bass lines, with crunching percussion and the with the eerie clicks and pings that we are so used to, but done with expert precision.
The first hour was a bit of a build, and I found myself getting impatient at times, because I'm so used to 90-120 minute upfront and in-your-face sets that have been the norm now for the past few years. However, I reminded myself to be patient, because Lee is the master at building a set. By hour two, the bass lines started getting harder, but the BPM was still quite a bit slower than I was expecting, and he was playing really deep. Although the set I heard him play at Footwork a couple of years ago was also deep, that time it was more melodic and atmospheric. This time it was just dark, dirty, hard, and unrelenting but through the medium of a slower BPM which made it interesting. I found myself and others asking when he was going to pick it up, but I'm actually glad he didn't.
During hour 3, it started getting a bit more on the minimal tip with the eerie sounding stuff I mentioned above, and percussion that had me dancing my ass off. It was an hour of the kind of stuff I'd imagine him playing on the DC-10 terrace at Circo Loco in Ibiza. This hour was easily my favourite part of the set. I found myself getting pretty tired around this time, so I moved to the back of the club to get a breather. I had been near the front for a good portion of the night, but when I moved to the back, I get my second wind, and got locked in a groove for about 45 minutes. I don't know what it is about the back of Footwork, but I find that it is there where it is the easiest to lose myself in the music.
In the last 30 minutes, he started to get a bit more progressive and melodic. The last 3 tracks in his set were quite something else, and he ended the set perfectly.
This was my first time at Footwork in a couple of months, and my first time seeing Lee in over a year. Time and time again, he proves himself to be one of the best DJs out there, and easily one of my favourites. That was in the top 3 sets I've ever heard him play, (after hearing him at Footwork in November 2008, and b2b with Danny Howells at Aerobar during WMC 2010).
Keep up the good work Lee, and Footwork. What a great night!
I am looking forward to Barato's birthday next Friday and Guillaume & Coutu Dumonts the following week. |

Awesome review Graham, and nice to see you. I haven't been anywhere but Footwork the past few times I've gone out myself - which hasn't been a lot these days - but I've yet to experience a bad night. I'm digging the benches along the left wall. :)
Not much else to say about Lee that you didn't already say. He truly is such a unique and dynamic DJ, and the excitement of wondering "What's he gonna play tonight?" is what keeps me coming back to hear him. He played tough and grinding all night long, never neglecting those deep delicious grooves. Lee is the best! Fabulous night! And great crowd at FW as always too. :) |

Agreed on the reviews above, though I have to admit I didn't like Nitin's opening set and wished Lee went on earlier than he did. Nitin's set was pretty boring to me and no tracks really stood out. I guess if the point of his set was to set up the headliner and build the anticipation then I guess he succeeded, because there was nothing more I wanted than for Lee to get on the decks while he was on.
Lee, as always, delivered big time. You could tell when he came on from his first track. What a bassline. I wish he would do one of his "All Day I Dream" roof top parties here in Toronto. |

I really enjoyed myself for my first time out in about a year. Lee always delivers, and if there's one DJ that'll drag me off my ass when I've been out of the loop, it's him.
Damn shame I had to miss the last hour of his set, but hot damn if I didn't enjoy the few hours I WAS there for. And the DJ right before him was stellar, but I don't know his name unfortunately.
The place was packed, to avoid going all the way to back, I was forced to dance up on the platformed seating area in the right corner, but some smart people were nice enough to move those tables out of the way to make more space about 30 minutes into Lee's set. Turned out to be a great place to set up camp for the night.
Think Saturday was just what I needed to get me back in the habit of heading over to FW on the regular :D |

The back corner, or the front corner? I'm talking about the front corner, to the right of the booth if you're facing it. And I was still catching tons of air from the fan :p Another reason I was really enjoying that spot. |

| Yeah same corner...I guess it is sorta near the booth. I still think of it as the back of (that part of) the dancefloor. It's not that I wasn't catching any air, it's that it was blowing my hair all forward into my face. |

Yeah for a little bit...was back and forth all over the place. But I always talk to the people around me, so maybe we did meet and just didn't realize it! :D |

I don't talk to anyone around me, so unless you were the girl that told me to stop looking at my feet, which is a horrible habit I'll admit, we didn't meet :p |
