At the very least get yourself some monitoring headphones as I think you may be amazed at the difference it could make.

I would suggest the K240 as a cross reference to the 701. i believe its great for mixing down dance music

here's my latest mixdown: [[ LINK REMOVED ]]

(track is not completely finished yet, but i feel its pretty spot on mixing wise - ive played it out over the summer and it sounds good on club systems.)

i'd check them out because once i got these back in december they showed me why the hell i couldnt ever get my mixes to translate to other systems as well as i wanted them to before. pointed out alot of flaws and even pointed out how badly mixed and/or mastered alot of EDM is. they definitely make you work for your mix and thats a good thing imo.

I'm kind of torn, though, I feel like having a set of actual monitors would help more than having two different sets of headphones.. maybe the 240s would have been a better choice to begin with but now that I already have the k701's I might as well just save up for a set of HS80's or something.

Do you think that'd be preferable to getting those headphones? I can't listen to your mix, I'm at work.. I'd absolutely rather have monitors but only if the extra $500 or so I'm going to spend on them will be worth it compared to the 240s paired with my k701's.

So, yeah, what do you think? Any ideas?

Appreciate the help by the way, I'm starting to remember why I used to love this forum.

I'd like to think that a set of monitors would guarantee a better mix with some effort learning them on your part.

What I'm hearing in your track is a classic hifi mix, where the often hyped bottom end in hifi gear leaves you undermixing it. That's the only reason I can think of that the bass is SO non apparent from your mix.

This is the last trancer I mixed on my HS80s, in a pretty bad room :-

I know of at least one label that'd be interested in signing your track if only the mix was up to scratch ;)

Not having a good set of monitors, myself, I'm leaving any critique of that aspect out. I've found my own productions have tended to gravitate to extremes in that regard, being both under-represented and, more often, over-represented in the low-end spectrum and, while it can be utterly discouraging to be in our shoes, I take some solace in the fact I'm not alone.

What I will say is that this is one of my favorite pieces from you. Really, really detailed work and for a genre that a lot of people could argue is over-exposed, I'll say that this production defies that. Kudos. Would love to have a download. Still play an older tune of yours, on occasion, and this would definitely make it into that rotation.

just listened on my tablet before I went to sleep, great track! I always enjoy your music (and I play a lot of your music) and this would definitely love to play this. No real critique here I'm just on my tablet but great work as always!

Thanks everyone!

I think the artistry of the song is great, but the mechanics of it sound dated. The lead was cool and the breakdown was really nice, but when it came out of the break the drums, percussion, and any type of groove were missing. I didn't want to listen passed the break. The song was good though. Keep it up.

wow, beautiful melody!! and the sounds fit perfectly together, in love with this one :)

There's drums and percussion after the break.. expecting my tracks to have a strong groove is just setting yourself up to not like my music, though. it's not what I focus on, it's not what I'm good at as a producer, so I don't attempt it.

Not that I'm trying to argue or get defensive or anything, but this criticism comes up a lot and I feel like the people who bring it up think I'm doing something wrong.. I choose not to focus on the rhythm in my tracks in lieu of things I'm actually good at, so I don't feel like it's a fault, really

Thanks for the feedback though, appreciate it.

agreed on the low end. The kick could use some more freqs and also the sub. The background-lead that comes in around 6:50 would maybe sound a bit better one octave higher, now itīs messing with the mids a bit. Great track nonetheless

Cody, I really enjoyed this track man, great synth work, nice lead, sound selection and nasty good energy gives this production a lot of authority - great one. I do agree with tehlord about low end need some additional support but the rest is just massive.

Cheers,
