so I went for Greg Downey this Sat and 525 was amazingly empty.

music was great and the setup reminds me of 1015(ghetto and pretentious red lights), it was really disappointing it was just so empty.

anyone know if this place ever gets pumped up or did I just go in a bad day?

Ive been there when it was packed, and Ive been there when it was empty to the point they closed it down before the headliner's set was over.

The packed nights... was usually some "trance" DJ who's set ended up being mostly house isntead that I did not enjoy one bit and made me feel disapointed and a waste of time & money. Go figure, right?

Sucks to hear, I am a big fan of Downey's. Would have gone if I didn't have a damn midterm to take (weekend classes suck). Weekly events with huge names coming through are hard to take off.

Ah, all the edm peeps texted and talked among themselves, and decided to go to Ruby Skye. The music was damned cheesy, but that was where the party was. You can't really rely on hardcore edm fans to throw events because there are so few of them. Basically you have to do whatever it takes to get people to come to your events. Even Ruby Skye does it, case in point, "Pauly D." They have slow nights too, like some Friday nights in mid-July.

It's the thing about trance lately: the big names pull enormous crowds but average guys don't do well at all.

It seems to me that while trance is very popular for people listening at home, it doesn't have the week-in week-out party base that you find with house or techno. Everyone comes out out of the woodwork for the "special occasions" like a PVD or something, but a guy like Greg Downey just isn't that special so everyone stays home.

I see thanks for the info guys.

yeah I figured maybe Ruby just had a bigger night that day.
Sucks for Downey though, his set was amazing pure trance.

I'll try the club again..

525 really needs to rearrange their setup. As much as I didn't like the club before it turned into 525, the old DJ booth setup was much better than how it is now.

What exactly are "pretentious red lights"?

I wonder at times, how do they choose the lineup? Does Downey have any fan base?
Say you just look at Facebook profiles, he doesn't have a fan page, which means his friend list on Facebook hasn't hit max capacity.
So he costs less, I'm sure, than many other artists. But surely bringing someone with a larger fan-base will benefit everyone...
Why nor bring, say, DJ Eco when he is in LA. Circus books a lot of smaller names, why not steal a few while they are in SoCal? Nitous Oxcide, 7 Skies, Orjan Nilsen to name a few that have or will be down there at that one club.... All would cost more but bring in a much larger crowd.
Don't give up on Taj, or 525, both are cool, and have some really good nights.

Someone isn't doing their job good enough?

If they are on the hunt and find out when LA/LV books the act, they could lock them in. If they wait around and don't figure it out until last minute of course its going to be harder to book. They might already have other gigs by then.

Couldn't get they also get in contact with other clubs and get a better rate because they are doing 2 gigs instead of just one? Kinda like how Giant does it...

I beg to differ on this idea that good booking would lead to good turnout. If you want to build a regular event, you should spend your resources and efforts on the party atmosphere. Have you noticed, back in the 1015 days, some folks showed up week-in and week-out for years, regardless the booking? Or you can take a look at Ruby Skye; they can pack the house on Friday nights with names I've never heard of, like ShowTech, Bingo Players. It is down to where the party is.

The thing is EDM is still not that mainstream yet. A well-known EDM name is still relatively unknown to the mass. If you plan to spend the money on booking a more famous DJ, you might as well use the money on creating a better party experience.

don't forget good marketing/promoting.

could have the coolest club and best dj in the city but if no one knows about it, what's the point?
