does it work after knowing it too? ;) |
It does, even more when I get to tell people they missed the point of the thread as well ;) |

Fresh immigrant from the airport, i got picked up by my aunt and cousins. I oddly somehow got to asked them which country is it, using various hand techniques and blah-bering.
They reply: 'Canada'.
I said: Cauh - Nahh - Lah (Roll the the 'L')
Funny thing is, i kept repeating it and they kept trying correct me. I got it correctly after a few days or weeks, i forgot. |

Really, with a Z!? I pronounce it with a final "s" (my pronunciation probably sounds like "boss" in California English).
But, yeah, I used to say "bace" as in "bass line"... it never occurred to me it could be an Arab name :p |
It's definitely not like "bace", but people have said it like "bass" as in the fish. Which I guess is fine...I mean my full name isn't pronounced "bazzle"...but it's not pronounced "bass-el" either. So whatever :p I adopted "baz" because it's easier to say. |

Yeah, that's still how I pronounce it in my head, even though I know it should be Bess :p |

It's just like Ass, only with a B in front. And a z on the end, and replace the A with an E.
Still smells like one though. |

I don't remember any words that I mispronounced for any extended period of time. When I was like, 4 or 5, I would say "thingers" instead of "fingers".
What I HAVE had troubles with is mispronouncing words when I see them in writing, and not making the mental connection between the printed word, and the word I know.
Misled - "mice-uhld"
Albeit - "all-bite"
There was another, longer word, that I would regularly mispronounce when I read it, and when I finally experienced seeing it in writing in combination with being pronounced by someone reading the text, I felt like a huge dumbass. It always seems so obvious once that connection is made. |

| Immolation pronounced as Imolation (EYE-MOLE-A-SHUN). My girlfriend still brings that up five years later. |

It varies. Americans pronounce it 'vaze' (rhymes with maze). In Australia (and England, I think?) it's pronounced more like 'vahz'. For me, that rhymes with 'bars' (the places you go to drink), but my [Australian] accent is different - We don't tend to over-pronounce the 'r' in words like Americans do.
I love these conversations :D |

| Vase = Vars, as in Mars. And since we speak 'english' not 'american english' or 'australian english' I can assure you that it is the one and only way of saying it :p |

Yeah yeah, same here. Like I said: Vase rhymes with bars. I wrote 'vahs' to compensate for the American English over-pronunciation of the 'r'. To us, them saying 'vars' would sound like "varrrz". Which is just wrong :o |
