I've seen firsthand the panic these things cause, so it doesn't surprise me to see inexperienced people rushing to buy massive supplies of water and whatnot.

LOL, I was hoping you'd see this thread :p Hence my first post!

Either Cat 5, or it's not news :p

Regarding the panic buying though, it's hilarious :wtf: I spoke to a lady at the supermarket, during the January floods here - Not even a cyclone. She lives near us, but right up the hill. She was freaking out that the river would rise so high that their house would be swept away. She's roughly 40 meters above the river height.

She had nearly everything in the ing shop, and was pushing around 3 trolleys :stongue:

Well, according to BoM, a US Cat 2 or 3 is equivalent to an Aus Cat 4.

So, if it hits a 3 they'll be sipping poop soup without a straw.

Wow, didn't realise that.

I read on the news half an hour ago, though, that it's already downgraded to Cat 1 (their standards), so Cat 3 by ours, I guess?

Not that a Cat 3 is much fun. It's not exactly kite-flying weather.

Well , I hope all you US folks go well with this beast. Remember not to tip your god.

There's an episode of King of the Hill, where a tornado comes through and the media calls it "deathwatch" or something. and then there's scene in the store where this one chick is freaking out and says, "Fuel filters? that jackass is taking all the fuel filters, what's a fuel filter I want one" oh man it was hillarious

FAO: STU

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tropical_cyclone_scales

Look at the charts on the right hand side.

a Cat 2 here in the Atlantic with gusts of 110 mph (177km/hr) is equal to your Cat 3 over there.
