Most banks won't let you close an account over $50 over the phone. Letter may have worked but I believe they wanted to make a protest out of it. Considering we're talking about it here I deduce they have succeeded with their intention.

I've never heard of the over $50 rule. At any rate, it is all spelled out in the deposit account agreement that banks are required to give to customers. Here is BoA's - Deposit Account Agreement

I really want to stand on the same side of these protests but when I see things like this, I just have to shake my head. If anyone thought they were above the law, it was the protesters who thought it was a "right" to be able to go on private property and have a "right" to be allowed there.

I guarantee you the vast majority of people who open/close their bank accounts do so at the branch. They don't search for or read customer agreements they received when they opened the account years ago.

Although I'm glad you sent that link because the 3rd paragraph has perfect example of why BoA (and every other major bank which probably has a similar clause) is scum:

"Sometimes after an account is closed, we receive a deposit for credit to the account or a check or other item for payment from the account. If this happens, we may at our option and without any liability to you: either return the deposit, check or other item; or we may reopen the account and accept the deposit, check or other item for you, even if this overdraws your account and causes you to incur overdraft fees."

Well they pretty much failed at trying to make their point.

It's not that they didn't know how to close their account or were trying to close it incorrectly. You can close your bank account in person. They were not allowed to do so. That's literally all there is to it.

But in your world, bank customers who are trying to close their account should have the police called on them because they could have just sent a letter. That makes no sense at all.

I'll just end it with this; I'm not taking sides here other then the fact that, like I said, they were on private property and were asked to leave. Depending on how you look at it, BoA can and may get bad publicity for that but the bottom line is, they had every right to kick the person off the property. So at that point, the customer should close their account through other means and take action if they so choose to make BoA look like a bunch of schmucks. But BoA wasn't "above the law" by kicking them out.

Dude, really?....

Seriously??? You can defend the Westboro Baptist Church on loose enough terms, but... why? That's the kind of argument you're making here.
