Do you still listen to artist albums?

What's going on people. It's been far too long hehe :p
Just a question I thought I'd throw out there to all the music lovers. When you search out music do get singles or do you get albums?
I realized over the last couple of years that i really enjoy music a lot more when i just grab the whole album and listen to the whole thing. for the longest time i'd been flipping through track after track looking for music after listening to 20 second samples, and honestly doing that none of the music made any kind of connection.
i've gone back to just listening to entire albums. if you're like me haven't done it in a while give it a shot again. biggest reasons i think this leads to a better experience...
1. you actually discover a lot of stuff that you otherwise wouldn't have given a chance
2. you give music the chance to mean something again. i have such fond memories of all of the old CDs i used to listen to growing up, but haven't really made that kind of connection the last few years.
just thought i'd throw that out there.
hope everyone's doing well :)
what's the last album you actually really sat down and listened to? |

I search out music in all formats - single tracks, albums, EPs, compilations, DJ mixes. But yes, I love artist albums, and for me the whole point is to play them in one go.
According to Last.fm, the last albums I listened to in full were:
Rod Modell - Incense & Black Light
Hexstatic - Trailer Trax
Jon Hopkins - Opalescent
DJ Cam - Substances
Speedy J - Loudboxer |

any format works but i think i'm more likely to like a single rather than an album. except for artists that i like where i try to listen to an album. however my faith in the album format has been seriously hollowed out because there are many artists that can't make albums.
but about having a nostalgic approach to albums in that manner, not really since i was quite into individual songs rather than the whole album. i mean i loved madonna's ray of light album but i didn't listen to the whole thing until two-three years after getting that for instance. |

I exclusively listen to artist albums for three reasons:
1. Most of the music I listen to is released in album format. Great albums are true art - listening to it you can hear that artist really made an effort, you can sense his emotions and intention. It's interesting to follow a narrative, highs and lows, changes in mood and tempo, recurring elements - all together it definitely leads to impression of journey and better listening experience. Compilations don't have that quality to them - that's why just artist albums are the real deal.
2. I don't really like mp3 (or flac for that matter). I haven't bought a single file in my life, and I don't plan to. I don't even know how would I play these files - I don't have an mp3 player and I hate playing music through my computer - quality is awful whether it's played directly or connected to the amplifier and played through the speakers. The other reason is romantic aspect of physical product - something that will stay with you and hold little stories and memories for the rest of your life.
3. Quality control - there are still some criteria that has to be satisfied when releasing an album. Yeah, you can self release it - press it on CDr or offer it for a download - but nobody will listen to it. In short, if you follow respected labels and artists, you'll find a lot of great music in album format. |

Well, It has been rare to listen albums lately, at least for me, specially an EDM album.
It's just easier to just buy the tracks you like more.
However, the last album i heard is quite new: Shingo Nakamura - Sapporo. |

| Yes, and I've gone back to buying them in CD format this year as well. My next ones to pick up are the new Cosmin TRG and Roman Flugel albums. |

Hi.
I mainly listen to artist albums as well. Here are some of the ones I've listened to recently:
Gui Boratto - III
Oslunlade - Pyrography
Cosmin TRG - Stimulant
Dominik Eulberg - Diorama
Richie Hawtin - Concept 1-96:CD/VR
Apparat - The Devil's Walk
Aus 88 - Black Tokio
GusGus - Arabian Horses (Probably the best album for me this year)
@Adam: Tell me how the new Roman Flugel is. Been planing to buy it too as soon as I get some money over. |

I'm usually a cherry picker when it comes to albums, for the same reasons Montana listed. Only exceptions are when the tracks i want are album exclusive, when the album isn't available in digital format or when it's more lucrative financially. Like say: Beatport has an album with 15 tracks for 11 bucks, whilst individual tracks are 1.30. So if you want ten of them, it's better to buy the whole thing. And even if there's only 5 or so i really want i'ts usually still a 'might as well' thing.
Last albums i can remember buying are:
Frl. Linientreu - Lifelines [Ant-Zen]
Manu Le Malin - Fighting Spirit [Uncivilized World]
Drax - Tales From The Mental Plane [Trope]
Demdike Stare - Tryptych [Modern Love]
About the romance aspect of physical albums. It's just not there for me anymore, far too impractical. I don't like having to look after stacks of CD's, I don't like it when they get damaged, I don't like the space they take up (don't like having too many possessions anyway). The cons have far outweighed the pro's for me. |

I never listened to many artist albums.
Looking at my cd collection I think about 45% singles, 45% compilations+DJ Mixes, 10% artist albums.
Often I already had most of the (good) tracks of an artist album, or I bought singles because of the remixes.
E.g. Faithless albums I never bought for this reason, only singles. |

When it comes to EDM I mostly listen to artist albums or DJ mixes, though of course I listen to singles on occasion. I just mostly use singles for mixing myself. When it comes to other genres I'm more likely to listen to singles or my favorite songs from an album, though I do listen to a lot of artist albums, as well.
Haven't really listened to much music in the last two weeks, but I did just get Gorillaz - Plastic Beach and have been enjoying that a ton. Have 10 CDs in the mail, though, including some artist albums. |

Only full album I can remember sitting down and listening to straight through in the past year is Biosphere's Substrata. Need to find some good new albums.

Absolutely, love listening to entire albums but I think the format is largely dying.
MP3s and players seem to be encouraging a 'shuffle' or custom playlist culture, which I do use most of the time.
Can we also turn this into an artist album of 2011 recommendation thread? I found a stack of great albums in the 2010 one.
some recent ones for me:
DJ Phono - Welcome to wherever You're Not
Cavalier presents A Million Horses
Mollono.Bass - My Hidden Playground
Pual Kalkbrenner's is really good
Looking at these though, they're probably more collections of individual tracks, but whatever. |
