I forgot to mention how back in the day we used to setup dinners with major DJs (between SF & LA). Armin, Ferry, Markus, others... |
I remember seeing Markus Schulz in Downtown Oakland at a dive bar of some sort. Small group of people were there. That was when he was just starting to get known. I miss the old 1015/spundae years. |

Yet if Marcus Schultz, Tiesto or DeadMau5 come to town for the ten-thousanth time, everyone gets excited.
I don't get it at all. I would have thought the underground scene in SF would be more exciting. This is crap. |
Well although this forum is geared for all types of music and discussions. The shows that will get the more attention are the shows that are geared for TRANCE or MASSIVES. For Example Markus Schulz has been destroying dance floors all over the world, so when he comes to SF, we all get hyped and excited.
This will happen with all the BIG trance DJ's. Some less known trance DJ's get less response but all in all, you will always see more excitement for TRANCE than any other genre on this board.
I'm for ONE a HUGE Trance head and would not be interested in attending any party just because it's EDM. I pay and go to see and hear the DJ's that excite me and make me jump around the most..
Don't be surprise tho, San Francisco's scene is strange.. Fridays are usually empty at all places (unless a HUGE Mega DJ is there) and saturdays are starting to get empty too, definitely different than back in 2001 - 2007 when Fridays/Satutdays/Sundays were packed everywhere.. |

Over the past year, I've mostly been attending the bigger events like the How Weird Street Faire, SF Decom, and the LovEvolution party at Kelly's Mission Rock the previous year. Those are always a good time.
I thought the SKILLS White Party at The Factory over Memorial Day Weekend was pretty awesome. It always helps when you have a bird's eye view on-stage with one of the performers.
I'm looking to get a couple weeklies or at least one weekly going up here pretty soon. I'll be scouting venues in the next couple of months. I'll be looking to support local talent with out of town talent as well. I feel that the locals really have to represent their city and promote the shows to their friends and family. The successful parties in LA have always grown out of a strong promotional team of local promoters and DJs working together to create something really special and magic. It's the same anywhere. The more people you involve in the process, the stronger numbers you are going to see on the dancefloor. Instead of excluding people, include as many positive people as possible into your crew to help grow and expand electronic dance music and culture in your community. |

I went to see Alex Kenji's set at Ruby Skye last night and it was pretty sad state of affairs. At the very peak of he evening, there were ~50 people in the club. 30 on the floor and 20 upstairs drinking. Past 1am there were around 20 people left. From 1:45 to 2:15, there were about 10 of us stragglers around.
It's hard to really get into the music when there are more security per capita than people trying to enjoy themselves.
Alex has changed his style from tech house to a faster house with more vocals. I'm more into tech house and prog, but all things considered, it was a decent time. He payed some nice/techy tracks at the end of the evening.
I can handle a small crowd in a smaller place (like EndUp) and if the dj is good, it doesn't bother me to be the only person on the floor. But Ruby is too big and I don't feel comfortable with ten security guards wanting me to leave so they can go home early.
Back to the basis of this thread ... Over the past year I've been disappointed a few times that some of my favorite producers haven't received any props from the principals in this forum. Now that I mentioned it, if anyone else loves tech/prog and sees a great show coming up, let us know. I'll be looking out too. |

i think vessel would have been a better venue for kenji. surely he couldn't have been expected to fill ruby skye, and thursday nights there are already hit and miss as it is, even when some of the bigger names are playing |

Yeah, the thursday night techno/tech house crowd just goes to vessel every time.
Schuey, your problem is expecting to get good music and good crowd at ruby. It just doesn't happen there except for when they book Sasha or Digweed. On the bright side, sasha WILL be there halloween weekend.
Overall, "prog" names just don't go down well in SF. Your best bet is to be going after the more "underground" techno/deep house scene. It's been moving in a proggy direction anyway. Hit up the dirtybird shows, AYLI parties, Forward parties, etc etc etc. There's plenty of really good music with a good crowd to be had. Ruby Skye is just not the place.
The big one coming up: Rebel Rave at PW in a couple of weeks. |
