if they have shoes by their front door, i take that as a cue to take mine off. if they don't/are wearing shoes themselves, i don't take mine off. my floors are all hardwood/exposed concrete, so i wear socks/slippers at home for the most part. i never ask anyone to take off their shoes at my place - just never bothered me.
my best friend had a room mate in college who was asian so she was like programmed to start taking off her shoes so when we lived together she never wore shoes inside. i don't see what the big deal is, unless your shoes are muddy/wet. |

absolutely always take them off. they'll let you know if you don't need to when you're in the process of removing them.
it's just polite, you don't want to assume anything - even if they are wearing shoes.
i don't see this practice state-side much... if at all. but in our appartment in moscow we would always have a couple pairs of spare slippers for guests. but i guess that's because we weren't always cranking heat in soviet russia and our bare floors were pretty cold. |

My family's maid always used to vacuum and clean with bare feet. I always thought it was kind of gross. |

I would insist that people wear shoes in my house, for their own good. But my main floor is all wood flooring or tile, and my girlfriend does dog rescue and there is often between 4 and 10 dogs in the house, plus a four-year-old girl.
The water bowls alone ensure that there's always water all over the kitchen.
None of my friends can do any more damage than my actual housemates. :stongue: |
