There's a faint hope that it doesn't get passed by Senate, but since the Conservative government has a majority in the Senate, the chance is extremely slim. The best we can hope for now is an increased public awareness and possible positive amendments made to the bill in the Senate reading
here's an example of why we are heading down the wrong path....
People need to become better informed on these issues.

Some people have been interviewed on radio & TV recently who point out that many of the USA states are taking steps to reduce their prison systems. Including Texas and California. It costs too much and doesn't work.
When the convicted eventually get released down there even for minor crimes they're stigmatized for life and will likely be unemployed and poor forever, plus they can't get food stamps. It creates an underclass. No rehabilitation, just punishment.
Conservatives = Republicans
I know an American guy who did some minor drug dealing down there and got caught. His trial was about to start and he got really worried they were gonna try for a 30 year sentence, so he fled to Canada and was allowed to stay. Seems like a nice guy who made a mistake when he was young, now he's got a job here and no problem at all. Down there he'd be ruined.

Do I actually long for the days of a liberal dominated senate?
*shudder*

This bill is guaranteed to do at least two things:
1) artificially increase the amount of crime in Canada
2) force taxpayers to shell out millions of dollars to pay for the influx of criminals who will move into the justice system in the coming years.
I've been saying this for years but most people don't want to face reality: the Conservative government rules entirely based on fear-driven ideology and has zero concern for sound social science data on criminality (Justice Minister Rob Nicholson has, in fact, stated "We don't govern on the basis of statistics").
As someone with a Master's Degree in drug studies and criminology I can say with absolute confidence that there is near universal agreement amongst the experts -- people who's lives are dedicated to objectively studying how crime policies impact society -- that this kind of draconian legislation will NOT reduce crime or make our communities any safer - decades and decades of data from the U.S. have shown the ineffectiveness of mandatory minimum sentences.
But what matters to those in charge is, above all else, money...and criminal justice is BIG business.

Have you ever been to jail, or known anybody that went to jail?
I've had a few friends go, and trust me, they were glad to get out, to say the least.

Totally agree. Jail being a hotel probably only applies to white collard criminals.
Anyways it seem the bill will be in place by March 16th. The only thing we can do now is spread knowledge and hope people will not want to put up with this. The conservative bills are ass backwards. My friend sent me a link about them also changing the gun register so you can now own some pretty bad ass 50 cal. guns??? Do we live in america?

So you want people coming out of jail to be living in a social black hole? Yeah that's going to be amazing for rehabilitation.
You don't want them to know what is happening in the world, or access to wikipedia?
, give them as much time on wikipedia, and howstuffworks.com as possible. Hell give them access to Standford's Engineering Everywhere initiative, or Academic Earth.
Pretty short sighted Yohan. With that type of thinking, it looks like you are for mandatory sentencing, and more people in jail.
