Conservative Crime Bill

Lowest crime rates in 30 yrs and then you have this ridiculous bill. Minimum Mandatory Sentences (which are proven have little effect on recidivism) got several states in massive deficits. You'll soon have some people do 6 months jail for a few plants of personal-use pot. Where's the tough laws on white collar, corporate crimes that are very devastating to the public at large? Oh yeah, they're the main contributors to the Conservative Party.
Sure, increase penalties for repeat violent offenders and repeat sex offenders, but you also need to put money into community-based and institutional programs designed to address the offending behaviour.I doubt Harper will do this though. Let's face it, over 99% of offenders get released into the community sooner or later. Only those very few designated as Dangerous Offenders can remain in custody indefinitely.
This new bill purely ideologically-based initiative that goes against all objective empirically-validated research. |

Thinks about this. Hudak wants to force prisoners to work 40 hours a week for $.25 an hour. Harper is spending a hell of a lot of money on new prisons. Now tougher crime laws to fill the prisons? He wants you in jail so they can have cheap labour. The conservatives don't care if they ruin your life, you are just a number.

Will it make things worse or make things better? Only time will tell. I wonder how many of you would get your panties in a bunch, if and when the death penalty gets reinstated.
One thing, do out reach programs really work for many of the prisoners that get released out of prison?
I would rather see tougher sentences on people who drink and drive, but thats just me. |

Is there anyone that agrees with this bill? A study was done recently where it was found that 94% of Canadians feel safe from crime. This, coupled with the fact that crime has actually been dropping during the last 10 years show that this bill is based on nothing but Conservative ideology. It makes me sick to my stomach to think of how many millions of dollars and how many people's lives will be wasted by unnecessarily throwing people in jail.
Not only is this senseless ideological move very anti-Canadian, it is almost criminal, and is one of the most disturbing things I've ever seen a Canadian government do. |

Any rehabilitative program offered directly by community corrections (prov or fed - sex offender treatment, domestic violence groups, anger management, substance abuse, life skills) or via a NGO such (St. Leonards, Elizabeth Fry, Salvation Army) is totally worthwhile. $1 spent on that saves about $10 down the road. Then, there are volunteer organisations, and self-help i.e. AA/NA. If not for community-based programs, recidivism would be much higher; the more supports the better their odds of successfull reintegration, rehabilitation. Most offenders need to abide by conditions upon release, and most need to attend rehabilitative programming as a condition. Non-compliance results in return before the Criminal Courts or Parole Board, depending on the release mechanism utilized. The Canadian Criminal Justice System as it stands pre-omnibus crime bill has been envied by many other first world countries. While our current system does have is faults, this bill will totally Americanize our system and go down a scary path. I can see Harper privatizing prisons. Depriving someone's freedom for profit is just plain wrong. |

Although I do not agree with the crime bill, posts like these invite senseless argument and slagging, and detract away from the issue at hand. |
