well it certainly sounds like the real thing. plus the ausio quality is a hell of a lot better than the copy i had

It says "Released As 'Radio 1 FSOL Essential Mix 1' (2008) [The Pod Room]" The FSOL archived all their radio broadcasts and now sell them on their website, so it makes sense a full quality version would be available.

What is the deal with "Environments" being played so many times in one set :conf:

it's used as interludes mostly, not the full track

Environments is not one track, as such. It basically means specially composed or unreleased material used for the FSOL's live transmissions, usually serving as material to bridge the gaps between other tracks. Think of it as meaning "ambient environments". The inlay to Lifeforms alluded to Environments being the next FSOL album - it had only a blank black cover in the inlay, - but it was never released and became the great lost FSOL album, fuelling misinformation that the Environments tracks on tracklists were excerpts from that album. In 2007 the band remade and finally released the album on their own FSOL Digital label. ASC has used excerpts from the album in his own podcasts and mixes, as a tribute to the FSOL's own use of "Environments" in their mixes.

Environments is also now a series of albums by the FSOL. They're up Environments 3 at the moment and Environments 4 is apparently in the works. All of these albums are entirely new material (with the exception of Environments 3, which features a couple of reshapes of tracks from Dead Cities), so don't make the mistake of thinking they contain tracks labelled as "Environments" on old tracklists. The albums are well worth checking out if you're an FSOL fan - I rate Environments 2 and 3 as highly as any of their '90s output.

But there's no this particular EM available on their site, is there? Nor there's been in the recent past, as I recall.

There are a couple of tracks from E4 on their most recent Electric Brain Storms mix. Sound pretty nice.

I see. I might have to grab this then and have a listen.

THanks for confirming that this is the real deal.

The Soundcloud link includes a Discogs link, specifying a November 2008 release date for the digital file. The band may have subsequently pulled the file from their site, but as long as it was available for purchase at some point, there's no reason to doubt the validity of the FLAC file.

You should. It's one hell of an Essential Mix.

Yeah, I read in the meantime that they had to take down a large portion of their mixes because of the licensing costs and seeing that discogs link there's certainly no doubt they offered a high quality digital file of this mix at one point. But was that file in FLAC format is very questionable. Every mix currently available at the Pod Room is in (320) MP3 format, and the discogs entry also states there was just a MP3 format available. So someone probably just transcoded that MP3 file into FLAC and uploaded it on Soundcloud.

Nevertheless, the audio quality is indeed better than that of the old recording, so there's really no obstacles to replace that old recording with this new one. I'd still more than gladly buy an official lossless version though.

You're probably right. This is the same guy who has all the EMs archived, many of them uploaded as FLACs even though they were originally recorded to in' cassette tapes. I personally like that ty, grainy quality to the old recordings. Combined with the awesome Radio 1 compression, it makes for a really distinctive sonic texture.
