Request for constructive critism please.

Hey happy new year 2 u all. I think this is the first time I have posted on this forum I usually just read the old production posts for help with production tips etc. Are you allowed to post soundcloud links on this forum and if so would anybody be kind enough 2 have a listen to a track I've been working on lately and give me some constructive critism on it or any little tips to help me in the right direction. I've been producing for not much more than a year, and was done in my head phones, I recently bought monitors but have never used them due to lack of space. Thanks

if you're going to start thread asking if this is the place to post your track then the answer will usually be no. But if you just do it, with a heartfelt little note like you did above, than the likely hood of you getting flamed is somewhat nill. So just post your track and I'll listen although I can't speak for anyone else. I'm sure they'll take a peek too.

I'll have a listen no probs

the 'music producers promotion' is a better place for this

I went ahead and put markers on places that I thought needed some attention but before we get to that, Your drums, claps, and hi hats sound great. I think they're perfect for that Psy trance sound that you're going for. I do have to say that by the time that the break down hit I was exhausted. The first couple of minutes were building up to the introduction of the bass and I didn't feel like it was strong enough. The bass is supposed to be a huge addition to the track and yours was minimally effective. The riff and the actual breakdown sound great. I could tell that you got what you were after and that's excellent. Everything sounds crisp and clean- which is good for a new producer. There wasn't really anything missing in the frequency range as everything sounded full.

Now onto the markers.

Marker #1:
I thought this was unnecessary. This short of a drum loop w/ its only purpose being to put in a clap, kinda threw me. I didn't understand why someone would want to stop dancing for a 4 count and then start dancing again for 8 and then stop again for the introduction of the bass.

Marker #2:
There was a brief drum roll coupled w/ a white noise swoosh. At that point, since the bass is about to come in. I'd extend both the swoosh and the drum roll to better enhance the next phrase, which is where your bass is.

Marker #3:
I'd again extened the drum roll and complete the build. This is supposed to be where your song takes off. Make it BIG!!

Marker #4:
Again, everything at this point sounds great. However there was another unecessary or incomplete drum roll. Although you did put one in right before the drop. Why not start the drum roll at this point and take it to the drop? I think that'll make the entire track sound better.

Marker #5:
C'Mon Man! Is that all you got. Make that Drop BIGGGGER!!!! Do something there. Bring the volume down, differentiate between the parts of your track. Accentuate the drop.

Marker #6:
I like this part. This part fits perfectly. I just wanted to put that in here. I didn't want you to think I was tearing your song apart. It was good. On a scale of 1-10 I give it a 6.25 but it needs some work.

I'd firstly do something to the plucks from the start, modulate them or something, put a filter on them. Bounce them and reverse a part whatever, i'd play with the cutoff and sustain. Keep it interesting.

Your bass keeps playing the same note for a very long time, and your melody is very repetitive in the begining.
Find a nice crash or some kind of impact sound. Your crash is barely audible with a very small tail.

Work on your song structure, I'd suggest listening to a track you like and apply a simmular arrangement. And with time you will have no problems with arrangements.

Use your monitors, headphones are no good for mixing.

Good luck

Man I have to disagree. I was an avid participant in that forum but I'm not trying to promote my music, I was trying to gather feedback and insight from other producers who were like minded and driven like I am. That's why I moved over here. Anyone that's been in that forum knows that you'll end up with 30 or 40 thread views and MAYBE 1 comment. I don't think this cat was trying to "promote" himself but gather information about his track. Which, in my opinion, this is the place to do it. As long as its kept to a minimum. I'd absolutely hate if this forum turned into the other. This is a place to come for answers, not drop off a track and hope it gets listned to.

Thanks for that lads I will have a better read at your replies when I get home, that's exactly what I was looking for tho. Ta

That's not what the MP forum is for either, so if that's what you're doing, you can hardly complain about not getting any attention.

I used to be active there and I'd usually get ~10 replies in about 24 hours every time I posted a track. I don't have as much time lately, though, and now a track I've posted there is sitting with 1 reply and 34 page views, at least 15 of which are mine. sucks but it's not impossible to get constructive feedback there.

It just seems like this forum is like a big room full of producers- where we can all sit and talk about new techniques, tools, and equipment we use to make our music. The other room isn't. Its like when all our friends come over to listen to our tracks to which we probably woudn't have completed if we hadn't been in here. I dunno though, I think there's a difference between Promoting and trying to get more information on how to be a better producer.

People from here comment on threads over at the MP forum quite a bit. It's not all "wow cool track" or "nice job keep it up", I have gotten a lot of decent technical feedback from there.

And like you said, this whole place is full of producers. If every one of us felt it was alright to post new tracks here whenever we make them, this section would very quickly turn into what the MP forum exists for. Which would discourage people from coming to this section in the exact same way the MP forum discourages you from visiting it. Part of the reason this place gets so much more attention is because we don't have to sift through a ton of "new song need criticism pls" threads to get to the real discussions.

I wish there was a way to get better feedback, but it really boils down to people taking time to listen to your music critically, and give you detailed feedback, with no real reward to themselves. It's going to be hard to find a large group of people who are willing to do that -- your odds are higher if you do more than just "drop off your track" and hope for the best. If everyone did that, every single thread in that forum would have 0 replies. You take what you put into it, at least that's been my experience.
