Agree with this completely.
It will be a cold day in hell that I would see 124bpm in an opening but obiviously understand that trance is a bit quicker so may have to pick it up a touch.
Was mainly asking to see what genre people enjoy before trance acts, as I play a lot of out there tunes with a Hot Creations, Crosstown twist to my sound. |
The BPM numbers were used just as examples mate. The opening DJ should know what he/she needs to do to compliment the main act style and tempo wise. |

What they call Progressive and Progressive House these days is IMO. Not sure how it got shifted in the span of 4-5 years but it is not Progressive House any more as far as I am concerned which is unfortunate. That was my main style in the 00's now the music with all the no talent cheesy sounds is called Progressive House. I would like to think that Beatport had a bit to do with it once they started to place those types of tracks under that genre. |

Imagine your'e playing alone all night. Play would you would play for the first two hours whether you're stopping after two hours or after eight hours. If you were playing all night you would pace yourself, not over do it, not wear people out, save the bombs for later on in the night. So play like that as it's always worked for me when i've opened for others and i've found it to be a pretty safe rule that works. It's when dj's start to think that they are playing a two hour set and not two of eight that it becomes a problem
unless it's a festival with lots of dj's doing short sets or ASOT or something where everyone is booked to shine on their own then the above concept goes out the window and everyone just rocks their set.
To be more specific i agree with a lot of posters, Don't be boring, light builds to get people into it, some vocals for sure but don't bang it out, no massive drum rolls etc. But don't do this on account of the dj after you, do it on account of the time of the night and the length of the night just as if you were playing alone all night (see point one) :)
Another example is would you play a track you would normally play at the end of the night at midnight? no of course not but lots of dj's do as they think the night ends when they end and will drop some beatport #1 that would be must better suited 4 hours later.
Again this is not about the dj after you, it's about the crowd and the night in this specific type of two dj, headliner with a long set, opener plays to warm up type situation.
you guys agree with this? i'm open for discussion if not.

hi :)
haven't posted in years but searched "max graham gryphon" on google and this came up first so thought i would have some input.
Personally i usually tell dj's to do their thing. I would rather have the opener be happy and having fun that feeling like he has to cater to where i want to start. I've been doing this long enough to be able to start with tech house at 126 and build into trance or 130 progessive (now called trance but as some of the posters above mentioned will always be progressive to me) so i'm cool either way.
Just don't play the beatport #1 banger or "above and beyond - sun and moon" at 11:55 as it's just not the right time :)
IF i could choose anything before me personally? i would say chunky groovy house with some light builds to build anticipation. Sexy for when people are finding their spots, getting their drinks and slowly filling up the dancefloor. Basically what i would play if i was alone all night :D
that being said i can't ing wait for a four hour set... going to record it too.
