Tell you what I personally dont like. A safe/soft set from an opening dj which then has the crowd standing around like zombies looking at their watches. Rock that out is what i say! Make the whole night memorable. Its not like the crowd is gonna lose any kind of interest or anticipation for the main act. A few sing alongs for the ladies, a couple fist bangers for the dudes, a couple throwback tracks & just dont burn out the crowd. Once again, thats just me... |

The opening DJ's job is to warm the crowd up and get them on the dance floor. Being an opening DJ and doing it PROPERLY is a very hard thing that many have not grasped. You NEVER try to "out shine" the headliner, there have been to many cases of opening DJ's playing their set at (for example) 128 bpm when the DJ they are opening for usually plays at 124 bpm. I understand that this is your opinion but speaking from many years of experience opening for many larger names I know that your idea of will not get you any praise from the person playing after you. I look at this from a professional angle and not from someone that does it just for the paycheck there is a difference. |

Well put. Thanks BritishLizard for first hand knowledge. As for not showing out the headliner, that's what i meant by not burning out the crowd. Keep it live but know your boundries. I was speaking on the view from the other side of the booth & from boring atmospheres I've encountered from 10PM-1230am after paying for a full night of entertainment. It's well known the opener must know & play his role as the "in the mean time setup man" but its a shame that many have not perfected the art as you mentioned. |

Agree with this completely.
It will be a cold day in hell that I would see 124bpm in an opening but obiviously understand that trance is a bit quicker so may have to pick it up a touch.
Was mainly asking to see what genre people enjoy before trance acts, as I play a lot of out there tunes with a Hot Creations, Crosstown twist to my sound. |
