i dont want to come off as biased because i am mostly a software guy, and i am in no means a mastered expert as you can tell lol, but imagine someone with 10x more talent than myself, 10x more skill, 10x more luck, some insane productions could be made. just my personal opinion is that its possible and it just so plausable.
every instrument has its own color, you wont find the same color as most analog instruments, but that doesnt mean too much. straight out of the box the analog and digital analog synths will win against most software. |

That still doesn't make any sense. I think you actually mean "transience" and even then... what? Transience is a temporary, ephemeral state, basically meaning the exact opposite of timeless, enduring or classic.
What makes Echospace's music so good is the ridiculous amount of care and attention they devote to the most microscopic aspects of their sound design, and their entire musical philosophy, which is extremely specific and idiosyncratic. They spend weeks on end trying to find field recordings to use as textures in their tracks. I'm sure I read that a lot of the sounds from The Coldest Season were recorded from underneath a pier at 2am in winter. Echospace's music sounds so three dimensional because it's made out of real sampled sound that its creators have meticulously sifted through and listened to for hours late at night, and because they believe that the textures of natural sound are a beautiful musical instrument. Jokers like The Nautilus Project don't have anything like this philosophy, this process, this artistic vision.
Basically, it's a bit of an insult to Modell and Hitchell to say the quality of their music is simply down to using analogue gear, when you quite clearly know -all about the subject at hand. You can hand Echospace's studio over to any one of the battalion of imitators, but do you think they'll suddenly be able to make Liumin?
When it comes to hardware vs software, it's always the same: If it isn't in you, it isn't coming out of you. |

I've read that Rod Modell actually uses software nowadays. |

| These hardware purists don't seem to have ideological conception of the music they apparently love. These are the people who would be saying that machines could never match the sound and the soul of real instruments if they'd been around in the 1980s. Electronic music just wouldn't exist with that attitude. |

Wouldn't that pretty much limit the artistic nature of dubtechno to (almost) Echospace? How many others put so much work into the records? |

Well yes, that's why sljiva said "Echospace is all you really need". When there's someone that ridiculously good making the music, why bother listening to alternatives that simply sound flat and inferior? There's nothing stopping any other act imposing such a strong artistic impression on dub techno (or any other genre) but most of them don't because they're simply inferior artists. Echospace and the associates - DeepChord, Soultek, CV313 et al - are the only contemporary dub techno guys I really listen to regularly. |

| Someone mentioned Echocord, that label has its moments but I find the bore/predictability factor a bit overwhelming. I would take echospace [detroit]'s worst record over Echocord's best release any day. |

| Well Echocord is more club-centric I think that is something to keep in mind in this discussion is that people make dub techno for listening and people make it for dancing. |

How do you listen to dubtechno, by the way? I usually find myself listening to an album in the middle of the night (2-3 am) or during the day when it's cloudy outside.

Doubt he'd call you a friend, but taken as now a days we're a select few posting around MD..well, I guess the community spirit should kick in more seriously.
