I'm frustrated musically...

OOPS!
I've been very frustrated for the past couple months over which musical direction to take in my career. You see I've been making music for roughly 3 years. I started off releasing some stuff on some small EDM labels. They did okay I guess... However I felt a bit restricted and uninspired so I started doing whatever I wanted to do, VGM, classical, whatever I felt like really. Complete freedom. I started releasing my tunes for free across various websites and for the most part I got very positive reactions and feedback. But you see as much as I love to have complete control and freedom over the type of music I make and release, it's not really driving in any income. And I see that as being a problem if I want to make a career and living out of this. But on the other hand I listen to the music on Beatport all the time. Top Electro House, Top Dubstep, etc. and I just can't get inspired much of it at all. I just don't like the music. It sounds very generic and boring to me. Especially house music like Afrojack, Tiesto, etc. I can't lie to myself. And that's why it's so frustrating to me because this is all I really want to do. But the music that the masses seem to gravitate towards I hate. Anyone run into this dilemma? What should I do? :(

Make music for yourself and get a day job if you must.

I don't really want a day job because I don't get along with co-workers/people very much. But I do agree with making music for myself. I was originally making music for myself when I first started, but as the years progressed I've noticed it's turned into more of a "look at me."

Lol I wouldn't be surprised if this applies to 99% of Beatport.

Thats your problem right there. The sutff on Beatport that you hate is making $$ so what do they think of your tunes not on beatport, radio?? They don't even know they exist so maybe you need a different outlook to get you on your way to making music for the masses to pull in income. Then when you get out there others will hear anb like it then lead you on your way.

I am sure anyone famous in the music business does not hate/question anyones music(that I am aware of)Why would they hate the thing they love no matter what style and which is their job as well.

I feel your pain, but w/e...you get older, music gets tier, life goes on.

get a job.

I'm not entirely convinced what's charting on beatport is what's actually selling, for a lot of it anyway. I think the labels pay to get their tracks on the top 10.
