I've been very frustrated for the past couple months over which musical direction to take in my career. You see I've been making music for roughly 3 years. I started off releasing some stuff on some small EDM labels. They did okay I guess... However I felt a bit restricted and uninspired so I started doing whatever I wanted to do, VGM, classical, whatever I felt like really. Complete freedom. I started releasing my tunes for free across various websites and for the most part I got very positive reactions and feedback. But you see as much as I love to have complete control and freedom over the type of music I make and release, it's not really driving in any income. And I see that as being a problem if I want to make a career and living out of this. But on the other hand I listen to the music on Beatport all the time. Top Electro House, Top Dubstep, etc. and I just can't get inspired much of it at all. I just don't like the music. It sounds very generic and boring to me. Especially house music like Afrojack, Tiesto, etc. I can't lie to myself. And that's why it's so frustrating to me because this is all I really want to do. But the music that the masses seem to gravitate towards I hate. Anyone run into this dilemma? What should I do? :(

bite the bullet and make commercial music to get money and fame, and then when you have your career set, then start releasing the personal "freedom" tracks and hopefully your fan base will support the more abstracts regions of your work.

OR

get a job in a different career simply for money, and then release your abstract tracks for extra income, if you cant stand to make boring generic songs that will get you more famous, so that you can sustain a career as a producer.

Thanks for the advice. I think I will just bite the bullet, get a job for now, and do music as a hobby. To be honest, I'm beginning to enjoy making music less and less. It's becoming more of a chore than a pleasure. I'm also stuck at a crossroads with what genre I want to pursue in the future. Techno/trance is nice and I get a lot of positive feedback but I'd like to try something else. I tried dubstep, dnb, house, you name it, but nothing really leaps out at me. It's nice to listen to but I don't really have a strong interest or inspiration to make it. I don't know maybe a break will help.

Most music is subpar in terms of evoking a real emotional response.

There have been some good vocal releases even if a bit cheesey lately such as Mess of a Machine.

What you do. It's your choice to lead a stressful or non stressful life. Life lives itself, and will take you along as long as you are along.

If you don't know your own answer then you are hopeless aside from luck.

For relaxation meditation and "hypnosis" are said to be very calming.

If you feel stressed see if any of these can calm you down, almost as goo as oxycotin. (that was a joke)

Not sure how much competition there is there but as long as you play it safe and go high profile, you can both make the music you want and live.

Billboard plays junk all the time, anyone can make it.

Some people actually work to survive, and doing a job they don't love, so they say, but they may just be trying to improve job security.

Most people I know of who have made a living off music go into commercial production. Not artist production. Most small names make a subsistence off touring and grants.

If you want money go for the government arts grants. You wouldn't believe the stuff the government funds.

You should contact your representative in congress or parliament as a first step and ask them about assistance for arts and music.

Just send the same message you sent us to them, and they will help you.

Some bums became millionaires over a lifetime but doing street stuff can depend on permits these days. Its your choice how to live. Go all in, worst case scenario you loose everything and die in the gutter. After that is done its done so no worries they are ripping peoples fingernails off in Libya for supporting the wrong guy, it could be worse.

But make your own choices or get someone else to make your choices for you.

Unless you like the starving artist bit, just fogeabout stress and live the good life.
