Say what you will about the man behind the Deadmau5 mask, but Joel Zimmerman’s never been anything but candid. In an interview with Carson Daly, he talks about the spectacle of a modern EDM show before reminiscing on his humble beginnings trolling underground parties in his home town of Toronto. “In Toronto, I would go to Sam the Record Man, buy some dodgy ass ticket that basically said, ‘meet at Union Square, get on this stupid smelly bus and they’re going to take you to god knows where and let’s just hope that the police don’t bust this one this time’,” he said. “I’ll never be able to legally recreate that kind of thing, but that’s something I miss.” The whole interview is worth watching, so check it out above. Considering he's a product of the rave scene, he seems to have a really odd hate-on for DJs.

I loved the part of the interview where he talks about the DJ throwing his hands up and then the vid shows him doing the exact same thing. The whole picnic table description is hilarious also. Is that all he really thinks DJing/EDM performances really were until he graced the stage? His ignorance is off the charts. Someone should sit this guy down and explain to him the history of the industry hes in.

i agree..he hasnt experienced dj culture enough to comment on it. There is way more to it than just picnic tables and 2 cdj's. There have been numerous live acts that have done amazing shows at underground events.

Not to mention that there are numerous DJs out there who work their setups as hard as any live PA.
