There's no such thing as the perfect kick. What sounds great on one track could sound crap and muddy in your next track. You may want a deep, deep kick for a 130 bpm house, and then a light punchy kick for a 160 drum n bass track.
Generally I've found Deadmau5's kicks to be great. That track posted here does sound like a DeadMau5 tune, from just hearing the chords and sequences, but the kick does seem lighter than what he normally uses. |

| Yea, its Deadmau5. Got this track from a FB Post a couple of nights/mornings back- mylife is his Soundcloud. |

kick is awful. It sounds like a felt beater type kick a jazz drummer would use. It doesn't fix the genre or the track. The perfect kick depends on context , and you missed the mark,
And if that is by Deadmau5, well what you hear is not what you will hear. I think he has made enough tracks that he knows how the kick will sound and just has a filler for the moment. |

Here you go Ryan...the kick that God himself used when creating the universe ;)

A godly kick would be so massive, that the infrasound would disembowel you. |

A worthless kick for two reasons. One, Infrasound cannot reproduced on Skullcandys and Two, It's hard to dance when you keep triping on your own guts.
That's why God used the one above with that a 60-120Hz thud. You can hear it on cheap speakers, it has enough of a click to help it cut and it saves the planet through less need for toilet paper.

Nice kik, not the best I've heard but your'e right it's pure, unobtrusive, sits well and cuts through.
Thing to bare in mind is some guys have access to some serious gear, like Cranesong hardware at £4000 a unit.
I must have spent weeks of my life tweaking kicks but never found I've made one as good as certain pro's.
The EQ software I have just doesn't do the job. There has to be a reason there's a market for ultra high end gear, this old argument that gear is irrelevant doesn't clinch it for me. Like saying you could be a top skier with 2 planks of ply. |
I was extracting kicks some pro kicks to get a good comparison, and one of them was from Ghosts and Things. Comparing a kick on its own, and repeating ad naseum isn't the same as hearing it in the track.
For one, anything that is on repeat will sound worse.
Comparing a kick your working on, against a full track might be an unfair comparison if you don't take context into consideration.
Just a random thought that may or may not apply... |

All kick-kidding aside, In the Manny Maraquin (SP?) episode of Pensado's place he was saying something pretty similar. The manipulation of the sounds surrounding any given sound can make all the difference in the world.

Only 60Hz? It's as if Jesus has never heard a funktion-one system before...

*Funktion-One Level Hearing Damage*
"Oh... I see what those plugs are for!" |
