Good sound, the club was beautiful and clean, friendly staff, the room was darker (which I enjoy), but mostly the crowd was stellar. Great people, music lovers, smiles, very friendly... not pushy or agressive.
Hish Mash did a really good opening set. Very appropriate prog, mixing was spot on. Thumbs up!
As far as Nick Warren goes, I wouldn't go as far as saying it was such a great set. There was a lot of good things about it, but for me (and friends) equally some bad things.
First, you could def feel his experience and the fact that he comes from an era when music was more important than the DJ. Taking his time to set-up a great mood, nice diversity of deep/druggy/walking music with touches of acid sounds, jazz, ethnicity, 80's references. Young DJs could learn a lot from hearing a set like that.
It was reaaaaaaallly deep, sometimes I was just standing. Which is not necessarily a bad thing, but I have seen sets with more energy. Still it was really enjoyable.
Music was straight out of the early 2000's, It was like a time capsule. I haven't heard one single sound that surprised me or that I haven't heard before. Again, neither a bad or good thing since prog is not known to be the most forward thinking style.
But i'm sorry, in terms of programming, flow, storytelling and mixing skills, it wasn't comparable to some DJs like Steve Lawler.
Second part of the set had a lot of weird transitions, melodies and tonalities fighting each others... and by the end there was numerous bad mixes. It was also to my taste, sometimes overly melodic.
But I didn't care much about it and obviously, neither did the people. The crowd is very forgiving when they have a good time, including me ;-)

sounds like an up and down night from your perspective. it resonates with what a friend told me. ill let him give his full review.
Still id would've loved to ear this one out
re: room darker. I love how stereo removed some of the siting area lights, makes the place more raw.

It was mostly up since I had a great time!
I'm just trying to give more details about the music, because obviously it is so important to me. I rate it more like 50/50.
OkiDokie
I couldn't believe it when he dropped Shiloh- Cafe del Mariachi (Nick's own remix). That track at that time in the morning felt so good.
I had such a great time.
Julius, It was great meeting you too. I hope to see you around soon :)

Pretty good night!
3rd time at Stereo in a span of 3 weeks. Had to my the trek from Toronto to catch this legend. For the most part, I thought parts of his set were too up and down. Loved the first 3 hours -- the last 2 hours or so kept dragging on, I found the tracks were too mellow and that he was taking us in a direction that should have started at the beginning of his set. It was almost like he was telling his story backwards! I had lots of energy and thought I wasn't able to use as much of it because it was really deep and melodic at the end. I probably would have minded less if he threw in a couple of stormers as opposed to just one. But when he dropped them they were grade A. Lots of uplifting melodies and twisted dark gems. There were definately some magical moments but I enjoyed Sasha's set a bit more.. Still.. track of the night for me that still has me smiling.. I don't care if he played anything else, I'm just so ecstatic that he played this one track I wanted to hear:
WOW!! This track is stunning. I can't remember a time when the crowd at Stereo exploded in magic once the drop came into place. It was as if all the Disney heroes were giving it their all to defeat the darkness on the dance floor. So many smiles. :D I want to relive this moment again.
Left at 9, Warren seemed to be winding down (even though it felt like he was winding down 2 hours prior) and I was sadly getting bored. It's expected to hear a lot of slower deeper segments from Nick Warren so I'm not really going to complain. I understood his tale.

Just got home, what an incredible night! I was not expecting anything close to the caliber of performance that I just witnessed, I'm actually kind of speachless lol. All week I have even been listening to all his recent livesets in preparation so I though I had a pretty good idea what I was in store for, I could not have been more wrong. I have been a dedicated fan of Warren since 2002 but this was my first time seeing him live, his compilation have always been some of my favorites. Never have I been so impressed by a liveset since I saw Mr. Scruff for the first time.
Pardon my French but he pounded the out of Stereo and just kept goin, banging dark prog bom after banging dark prog bom, I was floored. The mandatory old school trance inspired melodies made an appearance every now and then but they were sitting on top of growly dark prog baseline goodness and did not distract from the mood of the set.
At first Setero was kind of empty but like an hour into his set a lot of people showed up, still quite a lot of room to dance but a solid crowd, abit less than at Sasha. I don't think many non established Warren fans showed up so it gave the party a really intimate vibe.
He played till about 9:30 and before the encores, finished his set with this really awesome live ableton mash up of New Order - Blue Monday, everybody who was left whent nutz, I have always wanted to hear that song on Stereo's system and it was great. He also droped Pachanga Boys - Time, it whent over as well and sounded as good as when Sasha played. I recognized a few tunes but was to busy dancing my ass off to concentrate on IDing them.
Finally met OkiDokie, he picked my white pants out and introduced himself, had a great time partying with you Diego, I look forward to our next opportunity.
I have some pics and videos that il upload later, but now it's sleep time.
Those who missed this should be sad, it was massive. Stereo stalf and also Warren even took a picture of all the ruined survivors in a group hug under the disco ball at the end, I'm sure that will show up on Warren's Facebook at some point lol
great review, you painted a picture!

Although I haven't seen any Disney heroes or anything, the track def stood out for me as well. ;-)
I think you also have a point about the story being told backwards.
The magic moments are only as good as the fillers and the patience in between. So since the set was very melodic, some of them worked well, some fell flat.
