Are you confused in general because you have no idea who these people are? Or are you confused because you know who they are but not the full story?

I am confused. |
This is going to be long, only because I want to get the prehistory of what's going on. I don't frequent the FG Forums at all really, I am NOT a pro but I am good and I do not have the money to go to these events that are held. With that in mind, my information might be slightly off but I do feel it is very close to what is actually going on in the FGC and with Gootecks. If someone here knows more information on it, please feel free to fill me in on it.
Gootecks is a person who was/is a subject topic in the Fighting Game Community (FGC) for the last week.
Forums like SRK and a few others FGC Forums have a lot of information on it.
I think I know most of the details of what happened but not all of them.
My sig is sort of a joke but is also the best rumor I have heard and I'm trying to keep it alive and it also might have some truth to it but I can't say for sure.
There are a lot of layers to the story.
Basically the Fighting Game Community (FGC) is blowing up really hard right now and has been for awhile really. Some of that has to do with Gootecks. Gootecks is an ex pro Street Fighter 3rd Strike Player that got into the idea of marketing a lifestyle to the mainstream audience about how professional Fighting Gamers live in so to speak.
There is a company called MLG(Major League Gaming)and they sponsor bigger games like World of War Craft, Halo and games like that. Well they are trying to get into the FGC by offering up bigger money pots for 1st 2nd and 3rd place winners. Capcom does not (at this point) want to give MLG the license to host their games at MLG events because MLG is known to drop games once they become stale. Capcom games always become stale but people keep playing them and the pros have their own sponsors and such. The problem is if MLG starts using Capcoms games at Tourney's and start giving big payouts then if the games goes stale and MLG drops the said Capcom game or games and the pros now being accustomed to those big pay outs, they might not want to go back to the old Capcom Tourney's with smaller pay outs. So Capcom is worried if their pro players get used to that kind of cash and a Capcom fighting game becomes stale, they won't go back to the Capcom circuit and might even start playing World of Warcraft because the money is so much better. That's one of my takes on it.
MLG is saying that if they get the Ok from Capcom to use their games at their events they will not interfere with Capcom events and some of these Capcom events have a 15 plus year history and still going strong. But of course MLG is already scheduling their fighting game tourney's with the games they do have license for (not Capcom games) at the same time as Capcom events because they want to see if there fighting games with bigger payouts can dwindle the dedicated Capcom tourney's. Shady and the first thing they said they would NOT do.
MLG is basically saying to the FGC its time to sell your self for the big money while the iron is hot but they seem really shady as I said. But at the same time who doesn't want $25,000 to $30,000 pots instead of $7,000 to $10,000 pots.
Basically at least here in the USA and Japan, because I think the only good player in the UK is Ryan Hart and as far as AUS, I don't know one really good player that consistently places in the top 8 of tournaments. Anyhow, my point is that it is possible in the next 2 to 3 years to start seeing professional Fighting Game Pros on Wheaties Cereal Boxes.
Ok, with all that in mind, this was a really bad year for the FGC.
1st. Capcom tried an online stream reality show for a new game Capcom made with a $25,000 dollar prize for first place but 2nd and 3rd received no money. During the online streaming a very funny guy in the scene named Aris who is known for his jokes and hard teasing. Well, he playfully teased a girl on his team to the point she left the show and said it was sexual harassment. Everyone that knew Aris came to his defense but it still was a little ed up. Second option to this is the fact that she really wasn't very good at the game and quite possibly forfeited her spot to a better player in hopes if that player won, they would divide the money. It's hard to keep up with all the things going on behind the scenes unless you know a pro or are a pro and I am null on each of those.
2nd. Two people, very popular characters in the FGC (one from East Coast and one from West Coast) had this rivalry going on, that I knew was fake after catching certain hints in the first few days but it was fun. Basically one of there close friends used their Camera phone and taped them in a car together being friends and talking about how they were going to play the rivalry out for more and more money. The so called friend posted the video and it went viral. And a lot of people freaked out and were very pissed because they thought these guys were bitter enemies to the end. This happened 1 or 2 days after the sexual harassment accusation. I almost thought that it was done on purpose to take some attention of the sexual harassment on the reality show but I am not real sure about that because it just seemed to make the FGC look even worse.
3rd. Gootecks leaves the show he founded because he was supposedly going to loose all his sponsors. The reason being for his step down is because a month ago or so at a big tournament called Final Round in Atlanta, he was one of the only people up to do commentary very early in then morning and apparently he was just wasted. Rumors of staying up all night doing Coke, Drinking and Smoking Pot later followed. So, rumors are saying he stepping down and gave his position in the Company to a close friend because he made the FGC look bad by being tired, high, etc. and that he needs a break or to go to rehab because everyone wants to take the FGC really serious right now to see if MLG is going to be straight with Capcom and let the big money flow. He was ed up, I saw his commentary but I don't think it warranted him having to step down for a bit, he was just acting like he didn't care about the games or players at that moment and just wasn't up to his usual self and compared Humans and Fish with Fighting Games and Esports (Esports being like FPS, I suppose). He said Humans and Fish have 92% of the same DNA and that is like Fighting Games and Esports but there is only 8% that separates them, lol, but everyone would have forgotten it the next time they saw him sober, I'm sure. But everyone is taking things uber serious right now and people in the FGC can't get away with what they used to be able to do and apparently people snitched hit out.
So he retires live on his own show but is really vague about the whole thing and said he will be working behind the scenes to make the Company expand but offers a You list to people that seem to have ed him over in the FGC but then decides not to read the names off the list and instead reads the names of the people he would like to thank. He is one of the most entertaining characters IMO in the FGC, very funny and all around good guy so it's a loss for some of the people in the FGC. He founded Cross Assault but too many people are woven into that Company that it looked like he was forced out for a bit but Cross Assault later said they did not fire him and he left on his own accord which is exactly what I would say so during this Baby Boom of fighting games, parents won't associate their kids playing games while watching people on drugs online talking about the games their kids are playing. |
