Best Mic on a Budget

What's up guys I've been thinking lately about getting a mic to do vocal recordings and a little studio set up so that I don't have to coordinate with others that have access to studios. I'm asking since I know we have some great producers here, what mic should I consider purchasing for recording female vocals? My price range is a few hundred dollars and would like to keep it low if possible so there is a budget. Please any advice would be good.

The Rode NT1a bundle would probably work well.

+1. Still one of the best mic deals around.

Oh those Behringer XM8500s are supposed to be pretty good for stupid money as well. It might be worth a punt as a secondary mic as they're a clone of the SM58.

I'll add the GrooveTubes GT66, if you can find one in your price range. That has been my go-to mic for the past few years and it actually gets more use than my much more expensive AKG these days. It was discontinued a few years back, but, apparently, has been reissued by Sterling Audio as the ST66 ($400 new, much cheaper on eBay). If you can find a GT66 or ST66 in the $200-250 range or less, I'd snatch it up if I were you.

edit: check this out (GT66 at $69 w/no reserve):

1 day to go. You'd better grab it before I do. :stongue:

edit2:

ST66 at $61 with one day to go

Awesome!! Thanks for the heads up and the advice! If I can't get that GT-66 I'll look in to the NT1-a. Which one do you guys think is better?
cryophonik
GT66/ST66 hands down. The NT1A is nice for the price, but it doesn't compare to a nice tube mic like the others.

For sure. Hopefully I can get it then thanks for the heads up.

Are you serious about those Behringer XM8500?

yup

They'll not be stunning, but for $20 they'll serve a purpose. You might find your main mic won't suit a particular requirement or voice so it's good to have a backup.
