Unfortunately this is a very general reaction worldwide. Victim-blaming.
Its exactly the same as saying about a raped woman "Well she could also choose not to wear low-cut clothes. Okay, what the rapist did is wrong, but damn she's an idiot."
For some reason it has always been acceptable to victim-blame men. |

But it is exactly the same example as with the woman who has gone down a dark side street wearing low-cut clothing. She has greatly increased her risk of being raped compared to if she had an anorak on and walked on a populated street, and you can easily say she's an idiot for not knowing any better and not taking better care of herself.
But the focus should not lie there and it would never do so in the case of this woman. there would be an outcry, if someone started to focus on the womans stupid choices and downgrade the crime of the rapist.
Just imagine someone publicly saying "Well, it may well be she was raped and its not a good thing, but damn she is also an idiot for walking on that street."
Recently there was a case of a man whose wife cut off his penis and threw it into a trash can. The incident was much talked about in the media, but almost always from a humorous perspective.
"He probably deserved it" and "ha ha, the sight of a penis in a trash can - amusing" Sharon Osbourne, along with several other women in a talk show where laughing a great deal over the thought of that. Imagine a similar coverage of a man who had cut off a womans breasts and thrown them into a trash can. Anyone who dared to giggle about that, could as well wave goodbye to any public career in the future.
Women who are injured is a great tragedy. Men who do the same thing is a joke. It has been like this for a long time and I must honestly admit it irritates me a little. |
