| im definitely not a fan of Steve Aoki's antics, and I don't think a lot of DJs are. But beyond that, wearing a Deadmau5 mask when performing or whatever... that's all fun and part of the show. I don't see a problem with it. Like a lot of others said, I prefer that to a DJ who just stands there and doesn't say anything the entire night. I remember going to EDM events even 3-4 years ago where at the main stage no one would say ANYTHING the entire night! That's so weird. Now people like Armin, Afrojack, and Kaskade are grabbing the mic and interacting with the crowd a little bit. I think that's awesome. |

i would still rather have the music that connects the DJ and the crowd. and that's what we've been pushing for our INCOGNITO events. i've seen tons of DJs who try and hype up the crowd through the mic but fall way short on the music. |

| I know Deadmau5 is very polarizing and his personality definitely makes people be biased against him. Personally, unfairly or not, I can't seem to shake my belief that his mouse head gimmick is what got him popular. But I know people like his productions so maybe I'll have to give him his due eventually. Until then, I do think he belongs in the clown category. |

right well i don't think these 2 things have to be exclusive. i'd obviously rather have better music than a great hype man on the microphone, but if i can get both... |

At my club, us DJ's aren't on stage. We have a DJ booth stuck in a dark corner of the club. No one ever wonders to where we at. Well, I take that back. Drunks usually go up to us to make requests and send birthday shout outs; if they get past our guard dog. lol
Anyhow, since we are not up there with the crowd, we have to work extra hard to make that crowd jump. That's where the music part comes in. We don't rely on any gimmicks because frankly, no one is there for us. lol They could care less who we are. lol |

| Half the time I could care less what the hell the DJ is doing, just as long as he is doing his job of DJing and not trying to distract the crowd from taking their attention off the music. Most of the time I am either paying attention to the bartenders or just overlooking the crowd, if I'm not dancing with lady friend. |

Your weekly is more of a pop-type music and crowd though, right? Seems like most pop clubs still have the old-school setup with less focus on who is in the booth and more focus on the music/party. It's mostly EDM that has transitioned into this "DJ as rock star on the stage" setup, as far as I can tell.
I remember back in Atlanta, there were a couple of Armin/Ferry events back in like 06-07 at a different club than usual, one where the booth was in the corner and behind glass, so most of the crowd simply couldn't see the DJ. It was actually really cool seeing them play in that environment, cause you're completely focused on the music and dancing instead of facing the same direction as everyone else, etc. |

Yes, we're part of that en cheese bubble that's going on right now. A lot of these DJ's rely on those gimmicks.
This whole DJ rockstars isn't just the EDM clubs anymore, it's everywhere! I went to a Pet Show a few weeks back, and there was this female DJ in line behind me. I over heard her conversation and she was talking about some wings or some as her gimmick. I was just shaking my head but I didn't want to tell her anything. |

going to college and getting a degree at a prestigious university is quite the antic.
steve is a smart guy, he knows exactly what he's doing. |
