Naming synth patches

Just wondering how some of you go about naming your patches. I'm in the process of re-naming a bunch of them for the Virus bank, and I'm starting another bank, and I really hate the naming part. When it's just for my own personal use, I tend to either give them a generic name that IDs the type of sound (e.g., SqrLead04), or I'll name it after the song I'm using it in (e.g., EverlastingBass).
When it comes to names for banks, I feel like I have to come up with something else, though, although I'm not sure that it's better to have a meaningless name, than it is to have a descriptive one. Anyway, my typical approach is to either:
- come up with a clever name that describes SOUND of the patch (e.g., BuzzkillBass)
- come up with a name that describes the synthesis behind the patch (e.g., Sync or Swim), or
- pick a useless random name (e.g., from my head, or a book, etc.)
Of course, one of the most limiting factors is that some synths (ahem, Virus) don't allow for enough characters.
Anyway, how do you guys name them? |

when i had hardware synths,
i would either end up with init on every preset or use the preset name already there and then have many versions. Since using softsynths, i save the actual logic instrument channel , not the preset in the synth, this way have all the presets in one place. Naming convention is always random altho I do make folders for the type.
One thing i wish they would implement is a global preset manager with ratings, keywords and different states so that say you have 4 variations of a preset , you don't need to have 4 presets. |

I usually start with the obvious BS, LD, ARP etc and then literally the first thing that comes into my head.
Which probably doesn't help. |

Big Tick Zen does something similar, as does Kore, but neither really gets there.

Do you tag your presets with your initials, too? I find that by the time I add a prefix (e.g., BS, LD, ARP) and my initials as a suffix (i.e., dt), I'm left with only a few characters for the name. Also, I tend to add a lot of real-time performance control with the modwheel, soft knobs, and sometimes aftertouch, so it would be nice to have enough characters to add MW or AT to indicate those patches that really make heavy use of those controllers. But, I usually don't. |

No I don't put initials in there.
I know what you mean about descriptions though, I wish all synths had the ability to write a few words if necessary. Dune and Zebra spring to mind. |

I just name them after random blues songs. I am always saving patches that i find are of a high quality but sitting there and loading one up has never been a part of my songwriting process. I find that they rarely end up getting used for more than a jam session.
Edit: I do however have a handful of pad, arp, lead, fm, etc. sounds that are from my synth's stock sound banks that i often work from because they're just part of my established work flow. |

This.
And I think it's a good thing to give your patches an unique name. (Few weeks ago I named one "PLUCK_Coffee Pluck" just because I had some damn good coffee.) It makes it easier for yourself to locate them and for you tehlord, your customers. |

Yes
I'm particularly fond of LD Str33thawk :D
Although you'd have to be of a certain vintage to truly understand it  |
