Panning

I searched the forums for a good thread on panning but had no success. As it is a pretty crucial process in creating a good mix, I thought it deserved some discussion.

What are people's panning preferences?
What are some unique panning patterns people have found?
How much panning/panning variance is too much?
What problems have people encountered when it comes to patterns?
What are peoples favorite tools for panning?
What are the best circumstances for hearing your mixes panning?

And anything else you guys may deem relevant, I wanna hear it all!

The pan knob.

Oh and my non smartass reply would be "PanMan" by SoundToys if you're speaking effects.

the angle divisible by 3 is a general rule when using 3db panning rule. IF using 6 db, use 1.5 , if using 0, use pi.

But seriously, right or left.

Man, I know I'm certainly guilty recently of some vitriol around here but me, this place is a shark tank right now, and this guy just put his hand in the water.

I'll ease up and rethink my strategy here. Post deleted.

No - You shouldn't have it was actually quite fitting given the questions. It was just the sheer number of people posting comedic responses in such a short time, lol.

I've already called out one bumpkin though, last week. I couldn't help thinking that maybe I've made some hasty conclusions about the depth the OP is presenting. Maybe there's more than meets the eye...

And if there isn't - weapons free.

I use way more Mid/Side panning than L/R panning. Also on Send Reverbs like faaaar out to the sides..

for dance i think m/s stereo processing is something you need to master. It really makes it possible to have wide uncluttered mono friendly mixes. In particular using m/s eq. you want to make room for the lead but not loose the highs of the percussion, bamm, on the sides. And now that there are so many plugins that allow this, it is magic.

Considering I never asked what panning was...yeah.

Also, could someone cue me in to what M/S panning is? and what all this talk of dB's and ratios means?
